candy-box

‘Ads by CandyBox’ – in case you see advertised content with similar logo on it in your machine, you may have an adware program on your computer, administering it. CandyBox is associated with the suspicious website, going by the name of Candy-box.biz. Such unwanted programs are commonly referred to as browser hijackers. They are usually created to change your homepage, new tab page or directly cause browser redirects to generate traffic to various sites. In this case, the site may be Candy-box. Experts consider these threats to be low level but they may cause redirects to high-level ones, and this is why their removal is recommended.

How Did I Get CandyBox?

One way to be affected by this unwanted program is by clicking on an advertised link or downloading a plugin to play a video or online game. The most likely way you could’ve gotten it though is if the app was bundled, i.e. inserted in the installer of a reputable program you may have recently set up on your PC. Third-party software providing websites, use bundling as a direct advertising and some of them may not mind what exactly it is they bundle. Given that most users tend to miss out on some installation steps or click on the ‘Express Install’ option when they install software, they often tend to miss such unwanted apps.

More About CandyBox Ads

Once installed on your computer, the adware initiates modifications on your browser. These may include settings changing that allow one or more websites to run on start-up, thus generating traffic. More to it, the app may obtain certain permissions that may allow it to display actively advertised content as well as pop-ups on your PC.

ESG security researchers confirm that candy-box.biz related hijackers only affect Google Chrome at the present moment. But PC users should be aware that some PUPs could be modified also to work with other popular browsers, such as Opera, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari.

The software may also employ tracking technologies to determine the user’s interests and display different advertisements accordingly. Some of them may be pop-ups, highlighted text, ad-supported search results, black SEO redirects and direct browser redirects. Some report that dangerous advertisements may exist in the form of ‘Virus Detected’ or ‘Is your PC slow?’ messages that prompt different downloads of plugins, rogue security software and other unhealthy applications and threats to computers.

Other risks associated with CandyBox related PUPs are related mainly to information aggregation. The ads may redirect to sites that promise free product trials upon entering financial or personal information. Either way, experts advise being on the lookout for any suspicious processes and PC slowdowns on your computer as well.
