Technology Addiction
« on: November 17, 2016, 11:03:11 am »
Hello community!

In recent years a lot of research studies have shown that technology (and particularly computer) addiction has become one of the major phenomena of the last 20 years.

What do you think about this? Do you think that it is true and how affected are you by this "threat"?

Yes, everything has turned digital to some extent.

1.) Media - Radio, Television, and Newspapers are still viable sources of information, but the newest and most wide-spread outlet for information has become the Internet. The World Wide Web encompasses a larger variety of sources and information. It also spreads the information faster, even if its fraudulent like in the case with rumors, but they also get dispersed faster. People, can see news from various different perspectives a lot quicker and easier, and even though TV and Radio have their audiences, the Web has turned some people to its side. Some people even rely on the Internet entirely for getting their news, weather forecasts, etc.

1.1) Social Media - social media networks have become more than just media - they have been a way to communicate for a long time, but nowadays, that has become to some extent a replacement of normal conversations. For example - you can see two friends standing next to each other and writing to each other over social networks instead of talking. Or you can see them talkin by using texting terms like "OMG", "LOL", etc. Another example - instead of asking a person owrking in some field for his/her expertise, you refer to a search engine like Google if you can find a solution to your problem or for personal advice.

2.) Gaming / Movies - people still read books, but more and more people want a higher level of immersion. Also, some people find it easier to imagine what is happening in a narrative by seeing it displayed and unraveled before their eyes. This is the Golden Era of Gaming - now the immersion is even bigger as there is Virtual Reality. With bigger screens and special timings of the audio, plus the special effects make movies the more prefferable choice for "learning" a story than books.

3.) Smartphones - smartphones and IOT devices have become an unmeasurable part of our lives - from waking you up in the morning, navigating you to get to places faster, recommending you restaurants and shops, being a camera, radio, flashlight, a set of a worker's tools and a lot more.

4.) IOT devices - IOT devices have emerged and have enchanced your living conditions, whether we are talking about the backyard of your house (security), or the depths of your heart (Peacemaker). Your life can depend on the proper functionality of a single IOT device, and sometimes you won't have a choice, but to have that IOT device, instead of it's non-digital equivalent.

5.) Technological evolution - reading everything above gives us the notion of just a small fraction of how technology has become so intertwined with our lives. We are a visual society, tend to read less, talk less and indulge more into the depths of the technological world. Everything has become digital or has a digital equivalent if you think about it - books, cameras, traffic lights, security sections, thermostats, fridges, and any kind of smart devices. Also, think about how the hologram is now a fact and being worked on, Artificial Intelligence being improved, and the advance of genetics, such as limbs and other organs being digital...

We are surrounded by technology, wheter we like it or not, and technology has become such a deep part of our lives that we might just be considered strange if we say no to technology, computers and everything else technological.

Yes, the digital transformation has caused scientists to create new theories that are related to the way we interact with the world.

However as citizens and ordinary human beings sometimes we cannot truly appreciate how much this change affects us due to the fact that we are immersed in the world.

IMHO, people are struggling to actually experience the Panopticon effect.

I think you are quite right and this thing is a reality. We cannot really "feel" that effect as it happens on a regular and frequent basis. When technology advances and affects us more or less indirectly, we just accept it and move on, but we don't think of its influence or how big a change it is, unless we really stop just to think about it.

We are becoming more vulnerable to real emotions, interactions and the technology that is surrounding us. Like Wi-Fi and mobile phone devices actually emmit radiation and that affects us. Tech can change our moods and the way we sleep and dream; what we think and how we implement it in our actions...

I was an addicted child and that was over 10 years ago when you had to work at addiciton, it must be hard for children these days with so much tech.
For me I found that the games I played were mentally stimulating and it was easier to be social online than at school as it reduced anxieties around social situations.

Yes, games can prove useful to cognitive advances. Take an example the grand 4X strategy games for example.

Games can help release stress, pressure and even social anxiety as @DaveRodda said. However, when it becomes an addiction and you prefer interacting with other people or even living in a virtual world, rather than going out and socializing with people face to face - then it becomes an issue. Not to mention that such habbits are hard to break.

As to today's kids - they have their heads glued to their phones.
I have even seen 2 girls (who were obviously friends),
who were sitting next to one another in the subway and chatting to each other via a messenger app.
My reaction was like:

And then I thought, maybe they prefer communicating that way for some reason. Be it anxiety or hiding stuff from the general public...

Kids nowadays have so many other problems, that we didn't have as kids, which is surprising to me, given that there is so much more access to information, etc. Maybe they see computers / phones as a "friend", an escape, a chill pill if you will...

The sad part is that they use their tech for that, other than turning to a person for help or just to share their problems / issues with. And parents who neglect their kids is part of the problem - the other is how society is shifting to be more rough and sharp to children. And on the other hand - technology is mainly about generating money, so they make tech more addictive - like gaming smartphones for example. Making games much more realistic and introducing VR overall and VR on phones - it makes it really hard to avoid, especially if you are already hooked on technology.

Well, technology addiction is there, but not exactly like a global phenomenon. More like, we need and prefer technology in some aspects of our lives, especially making work processes easier. But some things seem unneccessary or are replacing existing ones, if you think about it.

And a VPN service just furthers the addiction, don't you think?
