Mbed Virus

To make victims recognize the Mbed Virus more, it appends the .mbed extension to all their names. Mbed Virus is part of the STOP ransomware family which pushes new variants almost on a daily basis. The virus Mbed is still not fully decryptable, although it might be possible with OFFLINE keys.

Finally, the ransomware drops a ransom message file (_readme.txt) on the infected system to extort a ransom fee for .mbed files decryption. You can find a copy of this file’s content in the article below. Continue reading it to see how to remove malicious files from an infected system and how to possibly restore .mbed files below.

Mbed Ransomware – More About the Infection

The so-called Mbed virus is a data locker ransomware that has been detected in active attack campaigns. As identified, the threat is based on the code of the popular STOP DJVU Ransomware. The attack campaigns that are spreading Mbed ransomware are likely to be realized with the help of spam emails, email attachments, hacked web pages, and corrupted freeware installers.

Since a malware spam campaign is a propagation technique that enables hackers to spread their malicious code via heaps of spam e-mails, they often prefer it to other methods. For the realization of malspam campaigns, cyber criminals usually embed malicious code in commonly used file types, usually documents and archives. Afterward, they attach modified files to emails accompanied by a message and a spoofed email address. So, when a user receives such an email it seems to be sent by a representative of legitimate service, business or institution.

Files which are designed to trigger the Mbed virus on the Windows Operating System may be presented as:

  • Invoice coming from reputable sites, like PayPal, eBay, etc
  • Document that appear to be sent from your bank
  • An online order confirmation note
  • Receipt for a purchase
  • Tax bill

Such invoices and documents may be part of PayPal phishing scams as well as other schemes trying to get potential victims to download the payload of the Mbed cryptovirus.

The attack begins when the Mbed virus infection file is executed on your system. Threats of this kind are usually designed to perform lots of complex malicious activities that seriously disrupt system security. By adding malicious entries under specific registry keys, the ransomware can become really persistent. Once the threat affects the key RUN it becomes able to start malicious files every time the infected PC is turned on. Hence, we recommend that you check system registries and clean malicious entries while also removing Mbed ransomware from the infected system.

Eventually, all malicious operations lead to the encryption of personal files. For the said encryption, the Mbed virus launches a built-in cipher module after it scans select folders for certain file types known to be used often for storage of personal data. Every time the module detects a target file, it applies changes that transform the original code of the file and locks it.

Like other data locker ransomware viruses from the STOP virus family such as KODG Virus, Grod Virus File and Peet Virus, the Mbed Virus is likely to utilize sophisticated cipher algorithms, namely AES and RSA, to transform any file’s code.

.mbed File Extension

After encryption, all locked files will have the extension .mbed appended after their names. As the main goal of this ransomware is to blackmail you into paying a ransom to hackers, that is why the Mbed Virus drops a ransom message with instructions on how to complete the payment process.

Unfortunately, the threat is likely to corrupt all of the following files:

  • Audio files
  • Video files
  • Document files
  • Image files
  • Backup files
  • Banking credentials, etc

After the data encryption phase is complete, the Mbed virus drops the _readme.txt ransom note, that has the following contents:

Mbed Virus – How to Remove

The so-called Mbed cryptovirus is a threat with a highly complex code that disrupts system security in order to encrypt personal files. Hence the infected system could be used in a secure manner again only after the complete removal of all malicious files and objects created by the Mbed ransomware. That’s why it is recommendable that all steps presented in the Mbed Virus removal guide below should be completed. Beware that the manual ransomware removal is suitable for more experienced computer users. If you don’t feel comfortable with the manual steps navigate to the automatic part of the guide.

How to Recover .mbed Files

There are several alternative methods that may be efficient for the recovery of .mbed files, but note that there is no guarantee they would work. You could find them listed under Step 5 from our Mbed ransomware removal guide. Beware that you should make copies of all encrypted files and save them on a flash drive for example. This additional step will prevent the permanent loss of encrypted .mbed files.

Note: Credit for the decryptor goes to Emsisoft researchers who have made the breakthrough with this virus.

Method 2: Use data recovery software

Ransomware infections and Mbed virus aim to encrypt your files using an encryption algorithm which may be very difficult to decrypt. This is why we have suggested a data recovery method that may help you go around direct decryption and try to restore your files. Bear in mind that this method may not be 100% effective but may also help you a little or a lot in different situations.

1. Download the recommended Data Recovery software by clicking on the link underneath:

Simply click on the link and on the website menus on the top, choose Data Recovery - Data Recovery Wizard for Windows or Mac (depending on your OS), and then download and run the tool.
