Als je in de IT security wereld, je hebt zeker genoeg gehoord over het Italiaanse bedrijf Hacking Team. Niet alleen kon je hebt gehoord over Hacking Team recente hack-and-lek, maar je kan hebben hun slachtoffer ook geweest.
Hacking Team is famous as the company that provides intrusion and surveillance software a.k.a. spyware to authorities – governments, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
According to a post by moederbord , the company is now pitching their product to the US law enforcement. De reden? Encryption technologies continue to be a big problem for the FBI. We recently wrote an article on the topic. The Bureau is often cornered and the only choice they have is advising ransomware victims to pay the demanded ransom.
Because of the issues brought by these encryption technologies, Hacking Team may just believe it’s the perfect time to advertise their new software. As reported by Motherboard, CEO van het bedrijf David Vincenzetti heeft een e-mail geschreven en is verzonden naar een mailinglijst van hun potentiële en huidige klanten. Een deel van de e-mail luidt als volgt:

Hacking Team Infamous Hack en de gevolgen daarvan
Eerder dit jaar, Hacking Team werd gehackt door een persoon die bekend staat als Phineas Fisher. Als gevolg van de hack, 400GB + van documenten en e-mails van het bedrijf, en de broncode van de hacking en spionage gereedschappen, werden online gepubliceerd.
The leak revealed troublesome information about Hacking Team’s contacts and customers, many of them questionable. Bovendien, spicy details about their tools’ capabilities were also made public. The company was forced to shut down its Remote Control System software known as Galileo so that their customers’ spying campaigns remained anonymous.
We’re still waiting on an update about the company’s plans to release the latest version of Galileo software. In the email message sent to the mailing list mentioned above, Hacking Team’s CEO confirmed that they’re now “finalizing brand new and totally unprecedented cyber investigation solutions, game changers, to say the least.”
