Asprox Botnet Grows Through Spam Emails

Asprox Botnet Grows Through Spam Emails
The creators of Asprox botnet are sending spam emails promising a free Starbucks gift card in order to expand the capacity of the botnet.

The main purpose of the spam campaign is to enlarge the botnet, which has been known for the distribution of various malware. The primary function of the Asprox botnet, aka Kuluoz, is to distribute large amounts of spam.

A Starbucks Gift Card Promised in the Spam Email

The scam is presented in the form of an email that is supposedly sent by AT&T and offers a $20 eGift card that can be used in any Starbucks location. The user is presented with the option to print the gift card. As the victim makes an attempt to download the card, the Asprox malware gets installed on the targeted system. This allows the cyber criminals to gain access to the compromised PC.

The Asprox botnet can be used for various malicious purposes, not only for sending spam emails. It can deliver numerous threats especially designed to:

  • Collect financial information
  • Steal credentials for online accounts
  • Penetrate different organizations’ networks
