As a result of the program sneaking into the system, advertisements may be generated – pop-ups and banners with texts such as:

“Powered by eFast_Browser”, “Brought to you by eFast_Browser”, “Ads by eFast_Browser”.

The advertisements may not be malicious but they may redirect the user to predefined pages:

  • Websites crafted for social engineering scams like phishing.
  • Websites prompting the user to give away personal information, including credit card details.
  • Websites promoting rogue software products like rogue AV scanners, and similar suspicious pieces of code.
  • Websites exploited by malicious software and carrying on drive-by downloads.

eFast Web Browser Characteristics and Distribution

The suspicious program has most likely been mentioned in the installer of a freeware product downloaded from freeware/shareware providers (bundling). However, by quickly going through the setup process, the user may have skipped the option to de-select eFast. The program may also be available for download on the very same freeware/shareware pages. It may have a luring description, tricking the user into believing that it will enhance his online browsing or shopping experience. Such products are usually crafted with the sole purpose to collect user information.efast-browser

Data collected by potentially unwanted, ad-supported and hijacker programs may include any or all of the following:

  • IP address.
  • Unique identifier number.
  • Hardware.
  • Software.
  • Configuration settings.
  • OS information.
  • Geolocation.
  • Used browsers.
  • Software usage patterns.

In addition, the developers of eFast and similar software usually are teamed with numerous affiliate and advertising partners. This means that the data collected during the usage of eFast may be given or shared with other third parties. Besides the privacy issues brought by this type of software, browser hijackers and PUPs are also known to change the browser’s default settings.

As a result, the default search page, home page, new tab page and sometimes error page will be changed according to eFast’s preferences. eFast can also add a scheduled task and a desktop icon. Because of its dubious features, the program should be removed from the system.
