Security researchers have determined YellowSend by CMI Limited as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and browser hijacker. Moreover, several AV solutions have detected malware in software developed by the company. What is more troublesome is the distribution method applied by YellowSend – bundling. The PUP has been included in the packages of free software, and it may not have been disclosed properly in the Download Agreement. Or, in other cases, users may not have noticed it by quickly going through the installation process.

YellowSend Threat Classification

As already mentioned, software by CMI Limited is often bound with possible malware. Logically, an anti-malware scanner may detect a threat in the files dropped by YellowSend.

AV scanners detect YellowSend as PUP.Optional.YellowSend.

The browser hijacking component in the program means that the user’s home page, search page, new tab page and possibly error page will be altered without his permission. Such alterations are usually disclosed in the Download Agreement of the software. An option to uncheck the alteration may be presented but users tend to neglect these steps. As a result, the browser’s settings are changed. In some cases, restoring the settings to normal can be tricky or challenging.

As reported by MalwareBytes, once installed, YellowSend signs in the following HijackThis log:

→O2 -BHO:YellowSend-{61628E2A-4FF9-4454-992D-D92A8CD27399}-C:\Program Files\YellowSend\YellowSendShellExtension.dll

→O4 – HKLM\..\Run: [YellowSend User Interface] C:\Program Files (x86)\YellowSend\YellowSendUI.exe

→O23 – Service: YellowSend (YellowSendService) – Unknown owner – C:\Program Files (x86)\YellowSend\YellowSendSVC.exe

The YellowSend installer is also likely to perform a list of alterations such as:

  • Dropping multiple .exe and .dll files onto the system.
  • Adding new registry entries and placing itself in multiple system locations.
