Do you have an application called Note-Up installed on your PC? It may have entered your system in a bundled download via freeware installers. Or you may have downloaded it from its official website – note-up.com. Note-Up may also be available for download on freeware and shareware pages. No matter what your case is, you should be aware that security experts regard it as a PUP (potentially unwanted program).

Note-Up Application Description & Risk Level

Note-Up is advertised as a free event reminder. It is designed to easily set reminders for upcoming events and tasks. However, several AV programs detect the program as potentially unwanted. Some solutions may even discover Trojan components.

The primary executable file of Note-Up is Note-Up_Setup.exe. If you already have an AV program installed, chances are it will block the application and detect it as PUP:

Even though PUPs are not malicious, users often refer to them as viruses. Note-Up and similar apps can be ad-supported, and as such, can generate intrusive pop-up/ pop-under windows, banners, etc.

It is of no surprise that the developers of the app collect both PII and non-PII. Such information is typically harvested for marketing reasons. It can be sold to interested (affiliate) parties and used in aggressive marketing campaigns.

As visible by the screenshot, the software providers use several types of tracking technologies such as cookies, tags, beacons. Non-cookie technologies can also be employed. However, they are not specified and are simply called ‘alternative methods’. In addition, third parties the providers work with can use their own tracking devices in order to display targeted advertisements.

The Note-Up software doesn’t support any Do-Not-Track options configured in the browser.

Even though potentially unwanted apps are not malicious, their prolonged presence in the system may cause issues. Shortly said, unwanted and ad-supported software increases the system’s vulnerability. Moreover, adware produces ads and pop-ups, fake system alerts and fake updates. Clicking on any of them may let more adware and PUPs in your PC.

Step 1: Remove/Uninstall Note-Up in Windows

Here is a method in few easy steps to remove that program. No matter if you are using Windows 8, 7, Vista or XP, those steps will get the job done. Dragging the program or its folder to the recycle bin can be a very bad decision. If you do that, bits and pieces of the program get left behind, and that can lead to unstable work of your PC, mistakes with the file type associations and other unpleasant activities. The proper way to get a program off your computer is to Uninstall it. To do that:

  • Hold the Windows Logo Button and “R” on your keyboard. A Pop-up window will appear (fig.1).

  • In the field type in “appwiz.cpl” and press ENTER (fig.2).

  • This will open a window with all the programs installed on the PC.
    Select the program that you want to remove, and press “Uninstall” (fig.3).

    Follow the instructions above and you will successfully uninstall Note-Up.

    Step 2: Remove Note-Up from your browser

    Start Mozilla Firefox Open the menu window

    Select the “Add-ons” icon from the menu

    Select Note-Up and click “Remove

    After Note-Up is removed, restart Mozilla Firefox by closing it from the red “X” in the top right corner and start it again.

  • Move the cursor over “Tools” and then from the extended menu choose “Extensions

  • From the opened “Extensions” menu locate Note-Up and click on the garbage bin icon on the right of it.

  • After Note-Up is removed, restart Google Chrome by closing it from the red “X” in the top right corner and start it again.
  • Start Internet Explorer:

  • Click “‘Tools’ to open the drop menu and select ‘Manage Add-ons’

  • In the ‘Manage Add-ons’ window, make sure that in the first window ‘Add-on Types’, the drop menu ‘Show’ is on ‘All add-ons’

    Select Note-Up to remove, and then click ‘Disable’. A pop-up window will appear to inform you that you are about to disable the selected toolbar, and some additional toolbars might be disabled as well. Leave all the boxes checked, and click ‘Disable’.

    After Note-Up has been removed, restart Internet Explorer by closing it from the red ‘X’ in the top right corner and start it again.

    Start Safari

    Open the drop menu by clicking on the sprocket icon in the top right corner.

    From the drop menu select ‘Preferences’
    In the new window select ‘Extensions’
    Click once on Note-Up
    Click ‘Uninstall’

    A pop-up window will appear asking for confirmation to uninstall Note-Up. Select ‘Uninstall’ again, and the Note-Up will be removed.

    Step 3: Remove Note-Up automatically by downloading an advanced anti-malware program.

    To clean your computer you should download an updated anti-malware program on a safe PC and then install it on the affected computer in offline mode. After that you should boot into safe mode and scan your computer to remove all Note-Up associated objects.

    NOTE! Substantial notification about the Note-Up threat: Manual removal of Note-Up requires interference with system files and registries. Thus, it can cause damage to your PC. Even if your computer skills are not at a professional level, don’t worry. You can do the removal yourself just in 5 minutes, using a malware removal tool.
