TNT EXPRESS Scam – Description
The TNT Express scam is an email-based threat that is currently being pushed against computer end users. It is directed by an unknown hacking group who intends to use it as a payload delivery mechanism for other malware.
The current version of the emial scam impersonates delivery notification from TNT Express, an established and well-known logistics company. The ongoing campaign is distributed with the subject line of Consignment Notification: You Have A Package With Us and has these chararectistics:
- Template-based Messages — All of the sent email messages will be based on a preset template message. The hackers only need to define the recipients.
- Attached Files — A small file will be attached to the email messages which will appear as an archive file or a document. If it is loaded or launched it will initiate the virus scrips.
- Non-Personalized Greeting — These automated messages will not include any names or detailed customer information.
The recipients will be manipulated into thinking that they need to review their address and personal details to receive a package. This actually serves as a hybrid infection mechanism — it will not only scam the victims to install a virus onto their computers, but they may also provide personal information about them. This can be used for various crimes such as identity theft and financial abuse.
The current attack campaign is delivering the Agent Tesla Trojan which is regarded as one of the most dangerous Trojans in this category. It will execute some of the common tactics associated with this type of viruses:
- Information Gathering — The malware can scan the contents of the hard disk and acquire both sensitive information about the victims and stored applications data.
- System Control — Trojans will overtake control of the victim computers and allow the hackers to have access to the hosts. They can use this to spy on the victims, steal their files, and conduct various malicious activities.
- Additional Malware Delivery — Such infections can be used to install other types of malware on the compromised victims.
At any time the hacking group can change the execution sequence. For this reason we recommend that each detected virus strain is removed as fast as possible to prevent further damage to the victims.
