Config Type Will Damage Your Computer

ConfigType is a potentially unwanted application, also referred to as a PUP. Several other apps of the same adware family (AdLoad) which we have seen recently on Mac are ProcessBrand, StandardProduct, ElementaryMethod.

All of these apps have something in common and that is how they get installed on your Mac. First, they may either be downloaded from suspicious websites or be bundled to the setup of another app. This bundling method means that the ConfigType also known as ConfigTyped app may be seen as a “bonus extra” or a “free app” that is advertised in one of the install steps of other apps that you could have recently downloaded. And it is easy to miss such apps from getting installed because they often lie hidden in the “Custom” install and many users choose the “Express” install options.

“ConfigTyped will damage your computer.”

This is the message you may see displayed on your Mac as a pop-up window. Be careful and better refrain from interacting with it. Being related to a potentially unwanted program that message may be misused for an unnoticed installation of additional undesired apps.

What Does It Do?

The ConfigType program may also be designed to change the home page, new tab page and other web pages of your web browser. The main idea is for you to see its ads. The more ads the people behind this program get you to see, the more profit they will make. The ads that may be shown by this program vary, but usually are the following types:

  • Highlighted text ads.
  • Banners.
  • Pop-up ads.
  • Browser redirects.
  • Ad-supported search results.
  • Push notifications.

ConfigType can use trackers to obtain information about your behavior. This will help increase the likelihood of you clicking on the ads it shows. Such trackers often end up being:

  • LSOs.
  • Pixels.
  • Geo-locators.
  • Tags.
  • Cookies.

These trackers can be responsible for different types of unwanted activities on your Mac, such as obtaining the following information from it:

  • Where you click.
  • Your bookmarks.
  • What sites you visit.
  • Your browsing history.

But the main danger here is not that your information gets tracked. The main problem here that makes ConfigType indirectly dangerous for your Mac is that some of the ads may lead you to websites that can be risky. Such sites often end up being:

  • Phishing sites.
  • Scam sites.
  • Redirects to virus links.
  • Fraud Tech Support pages.
  • Scam surveys.

This is the main risk that points out to removing ConfigType as soon as you can from your Mac.
