MapsGalaxy Toolbar seems to be a useful browser add-on as it provides maps, driving directions, traffic reports and weather forecasts for Google Chrome. Security experts, however, categorize it as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).

What is MapsGalaxy Toolbar?

According to the official website of MapsGalaxy Toolbar, it “helps you arrive at your destination with a smile on your face.”

The convenience of having direct information about street maps, local traffic conditions, driving directions, satellite street views, weather and more sounds quite appealing indeed. The application is easy to install too – you download it “fast and free” straight from its official website, after which it appears as a toolbar on your browser – ready for use.

Why is MapsGalaxy Toolbar considered a PUP?

Although MapsGalaxy Toolbar is quite useful to have on your browser, security experts categorize it as a potentially unwanted program. The application is not malicious by its nature, but once installed, it has the capability of changing the settings of your browser and your default search engine to promote websites such as Ask.com, for example. And, although Ask.com is not a malicious website either, specialists consider such browser changes unnecessary and thus categorize the browser add-on as a PUP.

In addition, MapsGalaxy Toolbar is known for monitoring and collecting information about your browsing behavior which it may then share with third parties (advertising affiliates).

Should you remove MapsGalaxy Toolbar?

You might find the benefits of having MapsGalaxy Toolbar outweighing its negatives, and it’s up to you whether to keep it on your browser or remove it. Experts, however, recommend its removal.

You can use a legitimate anti-malware program to remove the application permanently from your computer, or you can follow the manual steps below.
