Multiple complaints have been registered about potentially unwanted software called My Speed Test XP, myspeedtestxp(dot)com), My Speed Test XP™ New Tab Page. The product is supposed to determine the speed of the user’s Internet connection. The free application is available for download on its official page – myspeedtestxp(dot)com. It may also be distributed in freeware installers for monetization purposes.


My SpeedTest XP Details and Risks

The add-on is not malicious but it is not verified either:


To install it, the user will have to click on an ‘allow’ button. Once this is done, the add-on will be added to the browser’s add-on list, and the browser’s home page, search page and new tab page will be changed to search(dot)myspeedtestxp(dot)com. The alteration of the browser’s settings is described in the installer, as well as in the software’s Privacy Policy:


To test the add-on, we have used Mozilla Firefox browser. However, the application is also compatible with Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. This is the pop-up message that prompts you to allow the addition of the software:

In terms of ad-supported software, such details are typically used to determine user behaviors and display relevant advertisements. Often, the term pay-per-click comes up. The problem is that no one guarantees the safety of the provided third party content. It may prompt the user install riskware products, or it may redirect the user to websites employed for social engineering schemes such as phishing.

My Speed Test XP Removal Options

We have compiled an easy-to-follow removal manual that works perfectly with adware applications.     Step 2: Remove My Speed Test XP New Tab Page from your browser

    Start Mozilla Firefox Open the menu window


    Select the “Add-ons” icon from the menu

    Select My Speed Test XP New Tab Page to remove, and then click ‘Disable’. A pop-up window will appear to inform you that you are about to disable the selected toolbar, and some additional toolbars might be disabled as well. Leave all the boxes checked, and click ‘Disable’.

    Start Safari

    Open the drop menu by clicking on the sprocket icon in the top right corner.

    Substep 1:

    Substep 4:

    You will see the Troubleshoot menu. From this menu you can choose Advanced Options.

    A menu will appear upon reboot. You should choose Safe Mode by pressing its corresponding number and the machine will restart and boot into Safe Mode so you can scan for and remove My Speed Test XP New Tab Page.
