MovixMuze and goamuze are advertised as an online platform that allows users to customize their new tab page and help them quickly access their favorite websites. The app can also assist users while they are browsing for trailers, photos, etc. The browser extension is available for download on Google Chrome Store. Its features include syncing the user’s mobile device’s address book with a desktop application so that calls and texts are answered from the PC. However appealing the services provided by MovixMuze may seem, the extension may be aimed at obtaining user information and may influence both the system and the browser.
Because MovixMuze can change the user’s default search provider to Search by MovixMuze, the extension may be regarded as a browser hijacker.
MovixMuze, Search by MovixMuze Technical Description
As we just mentioned, the browser extension is promoted as a user-friendly tool that enhances web browsing by providing relevant trailers, showtimes, movies, etc. The application should work in agreement with the user’s watchlist and provide relevant trailers, videos, and photos. However, MovixMuze will replace the user’s default search page to Search by MovixMuze. Even though that change is acknowledged in the Download Agreement, users who haven’t downloaded the extension willingly (or knowingly) may find it quite annoying.
Unwanted and unknown downloads are a repetitive occurrence thanks to the distribution method known as bundling. Bundling means that the application may have been downloaded alongside a free software product from download.com or a similar freeware page. It is not an illegal practice because additional apps are described in the download agreement. However, users tend to rush into automated installations and skip the chance to read the product’s EULA.
What is more, dubious applications may be spread via silent and unattended installers. A silent installation means that programs are installed automatically in a background mode. First, a setup package that contains multiple application installers is created. There are several silent installers that may be used by third parties to spread dubious software across the Web.
Unattended installations, on the other hand, mean that no user interaction is needed.
To summarize, if MovixMuze wasn’t downloaded intentionally, one of the distribution methods we just described, may have been employed.
