What Is URL Scam?

Normally, URL Scam is associated with detections in multiple low reputation websites. Most of the time, it can be traced to suspicious files in different Windows folders such as %appdata% and %temp%. Though in some cases, the researcher may give a false positive report, Avast would, in most cases, classify them as malware that may potentially harm the affected computers. It would, therefore, be prudent to take immediate action.

How Did I Get URL Scam Detection

Users over forums claimed that they got the detection message after a restart of version 11 for Windows or during online browsing.

Reports are starting to surface on Avast support forums wherein some claim that Avast is just throwing a false positive and hasn’t noted any weird behavior on their system, only that it was associated with some websites with low reputation.

The software may have arrived in the form of an unwanted download if malware. This can be from a malicious download or direct download because of redirect through an online message, clicking a malicious link, or a dangerous email attachment in a spam message.

What Does URL Scam Do?

Although widely reported as a false positive, Avast experts provided information pointing to the fact that the detection may also be malicious.

One user in Avast forums had the following to say on this detection:

Hi

Not sure if this is the right place but I’m sure somebody can sort it out

Avast keeps flagging up

Threat Secured. We’ve safely aborted connection on base2.sv.tribal-envoy.com because it was infected with a URL:Scam

Whilst I’m very happy that Avast has warned me of this problem it’s not actually telling me why this problem is occurring or how I can stop it. It is getting very annoying.

Only seems to occur when I’m using Chrome.
The details show that the threat is URL: Scam
URL is base2.sv.tribal-envoy.com/api2/m/debug
Process C:\Program Files\
(x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\Chrome.exe

Can anybody assist me in removing this?

Best regards

If malware is detected, it may interfere with the smooth regular work of the system and open a backdoor, allowing a hacker to access the device remotely and gather information. Other malicious activities related to this detection might include:

  • Getting information directly from the hard disk or using its space, as well as the random access memory of the compromised PC. This may result in slowing down of the PC and even BSODs (system crash).
  • Wiping off important data from the infected computer that includes important windows files.
  • Live access from a distance being provided to hackers.
  • Unauthorized installation of unwanted software in the computer.
  • Obtaining other information for advertising purposes.

Not only this, but this detection may be associated with a fraudulent website, whose main purpose could be to rob victims out of their financial and personal information.

In case you have experienced all of the following symptoms recently—well, then you must be infected. Security experts advise these infected users that in the case of feeling insecure about any file, it is most welcome to upload it to VirusTotal for an online scan.

URL Scam – How To Stop It

First, you will want to check for malware to avoid being detected by URL Scam. Begin scanning the folder where you had the first detection made with your anti-virus program. We would also recommend getting updated anti-malware software for scanning the whole computer. In case of intrusion, the software will flush it in time.

How Does URL Scam Work?

Once installed, URL Scam can collect data using trackers. This data is about your web browsing habits, such as the websites you visit and the search terms you use. It is then used to target you with ads or to sell your information to third parties.

URL Scam can also download other malicious software onto your computer, such as viruses and spyware, which can be used to steal your personal information and show risky ads, that may redirect to virus sites or scams.

Is URL Scam Malware?

The truth is that PUPs (adware, browser hijackers) are not viruses, but may be just as dangerous since they may show you and redirect you to malware websites and scam pages.
