Yamdex – How Did I Get It?

You can get the Yamdex PUP through third-party installers. Unaware, you can get it installed on your computer because it hides in freeware installations and bundle packages. Inside the packages, additional components for installation may not be disclosed, tricking you to install Yamdex as well. This can be avoided if you see a Custom or Advanced setting in an installation setup.

Another way Yamdex can get installed on your PC is if you visit suspicious sites or click on advertisements, pop-ups or banners. The website of the PUP is Yamdex(.)net from which you can get browser redirects. All browsers could be affected, but mainly Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

Yamdex – More Information

Yamdex is a PUP, both distributed as a browser hijacker and an adware. When it is on your computer, Yamdex can change the browser’s homepage, new tab page, and search engine. It may add a browser extension. It may also do other changes to your browser settings. The website which is connected to the hijacker is Yamdex(.)net. The domain is made to be close to that of Yamdex(.)ru, but is filled with a lot of intrusive advertisements.

You may be redirected to many suspicious sites or sponsored content. From the redirects, the site owners and their affiliates can make money on a pay-per-click scheme.

When your browsers are hijacked, whenever you do a search, the results will be filtered by Yamdex, so you can see sponsored content and get redirected to pages for advertisement purposes or to get infected with other potentially unwanted software. Some of these pages are on the official Facebook site, as shown in the picture:

There is no Privacy Policy or an End User License Agreement on the site of the browser hijacker. That means that the developers of the program can collect both personally and non-personally identifying information. That also becomes somewhat evident as the advertisements differ according to your browser activity.

The information might be the following:

  • IP address
  • Referral data
  • Browser type
  • Name and e-mail address
  • Platform (OS) type and other information.

It might not be limited to only that information. The data may also be shared with third-parties and partners of Yamdex(.)net.
