In July, Microsoft made the announcement that it’s about to discontinue Skype Classic on September 1st. However, because of the negative feedback, this date got delayed. Unfortunately, the delay is also going to end soon, as Microsoft is expected to end support for the app in November.
Microsoft Says Skype 8 Is Getting Better
Microsoft promises that Skype 8 is going to be better than the previous version, with new features introduced (such as the feature to add phone numbers to existing contacts) and improved availability status. It still should be mentioned that users who were quick to adopt Skype 8 faced a lot of bugs and overall unsatisfactory behavior of the app.
Microsoft made another announcement at the end of September, saying that “we’ve been listening to your feedback and are working to bring some of the most-requested features from Skype version 7 to version 8.” That’s also when the company said that Skype 7 will continue to work for a limited time.
The latest information Microsoft shared is that the support for Skype version 7 will end on November 1st:
As we continue to focus on and improve Skype version 8, support for Skype versions 7, and below will end on November 1, 2018 on desktop devices and November 15, 2018 on mobile and tablet devices. Although you may be able to use older versions for a little while, we encourage you to update today to avoid any interruption.
Users will be required to upgrade to Skype 8 gradually over the next couple of months. For desktop versions, the update will start on November 1st, and for mobile devices it’s scheduled for November 15th.
Microsoft is encouraging all users to upgrade as soon as possible to avoid any future inconveniences. “As we roll out improvements, there comes a time when we must shut down older services and application versions”, the company said.
