TrackAPackage Toolbar by the infamous Mindspark Interactive Network is a browser extension that may or may not assist users with easy tracking of ordered packages from online retailers. The service it claims to provide is connected mainly with easy access to the package tracking information for the user. However, many reports have surfaced and claim that this software might be a browser hijacker or a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Application). However, we decided to perform research and discover how this application works.
TrackAPackage – How Does It Work?
Like many other toolbars, TrackAPackage may come in combination with other free programs that the user might have downloaded from the web for his needs or be added as an extension from their website. The main reason for it to be bundled with another software is the location the Setup file it may have been downloaded from. This is due to the possibility that some developers from third party sites providing freeware installations might add it as an extra.
When our research team visited the website and checked the Privacy Policy of its developer, Mindspark Industries, we have established suspicious policy rules, mainly concerning information collection.
The toolbar is authorized to collect possibly non-personal and personally identifiable information (PII). And when we checked the data distributions it raised some eyebrows because they state that they may share information with third parties and advertisers, including investors for a business analysis purposes. We are not sure what those business analysis purposes are, however just in case, it is recommended to be cautious regarding the information you share when you install Mindspark Interactive Network products on the web.
After that, we decided to add it to Google Chrome to examine the service it provides. At the beginning, we saw that it also states some suspicious permission requests to us.
Here we see that this software may also change the browsing history and could manage the downloads, extensions and themes as well. This is strange, since some of those do not have anything to do at all with the services that they claim to provide.
When we restarted Google Chrome web browser, we have noticed that there was no toolbar under the address bar on Chrome. However, there was a browser extension that was actively present and working. Our researchers also performed the usual scan with special protection software, and it also classified it as an unwanted program:
We tried to look for any signs of what this extension does by checking for content all over Google Chrome that will help us track our packages. Unfortunately, we failed to find any signs of usefulness. We did not see the toolbar that was displayed on the website. However, it might appear on other web browsers.
