EasyDocMerge Toolbar is a suspicious browser extension, developed by Mindspark Interactive Network Inc. and is considered by some security experts to be a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). The toolbar can be added to one of the widely used browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari) from the website easydocmerge.com or by being bundled with other free software, downloaded online. Many people consider the app unsafe because it works with many third parties, and some of the user information may be exposed.
EasyDocMerge Toolbar – What Does It Do?
Like many other Mindspark products, such as FileSendSuite, GoUnzipToolbar, Convert Docs Now, SMSFromBrowser, TrackaPackage, Downspeedtest the toolbar may come in combination with other free software as an extra. The average internet users tend to miss few steps during the installation process, and this is the most often reason, similar PUPs can get into the computer.
As soon as it is installed, the extension prompts the user to accept new settings and homepage and requests certain permissions to run. Typical for Mindspark, there are the permissions to manage all apps, downloads, and themes and to read and change the data on the visited websites. These permits usually are being requested by adware PUPs to display targeted advertisements in the form of annoying pop-up messages. Those ads may be based on information gathered from cookie files on the computer that track the user interests. The third party sites from those very ads may conceal various risks from the user. Some of them may steal user credentials such as financial information, etc. Some of them may use various tricks to install malware on the user PC.
Also, when the toolbar`s privacy policy was reviewed, it was uncovered that even Mindspark admit that their product may be unsafe, which transfers the responsibility directly to the user.
After installation, when the usual PC scan with antima-lware scanner program was performed, some potential threats to the information on the machine were discovered.
The antimalware scanner identified 219 infections on the system, all connected with EasyDocMerge. Most of them are connected with tracking cookies and were in the /extensions folder in Google Chrome directory.
Also when we examined the service the toolbar, provides, we have discovered that it does not have its service. So at the bottom line, we have a toolbar, using other sites for the service it claims to provide, which collects different information from the PC to possibly display content based on that.
