Alpha Shopper Ads – How Does It Work?
This program usually may arrive on user PCs marked as a free ‘extra’ in combination with the installers of other free programs the user deliberately downloaded from a third-party website. Once it is situated on the computer, it may initiate a .exe process in the task manager. Another action it might take is install tracking cookies (LSOs) with long expiration dates that follow the user browser searches and browsing history. The program does that with the purpose of displaying advertisements by the so-called ‘behavioral marketing’ method.
Some security experts report that the adware may automatically install other software, such as BrowseSmart. This may result in various consequences, mainly in PC slowdowns.
Also, similar to other adware programs such as CycloneCover or Sponsored Ads this PUP may display annoying ad content that redirects to third-party websites. Some redirects to such sites may conceal various risks from the user:
- Conning the user, by displaying messages that his/her machine is slow or infected to make him conduct expensive calls to fake tech support numbers.
- The redirects to sites that could display fake problems such as ‘Your Flash Player needs an update!’ or similar and may download malicious files onto your PC.
Scamming of the user into entering his personal info as a part of a registration for a free trial of a service, prize claiming or contest participations.
Cyber-criminals have become very smart, and they are always developing new means of obtaining user information. This is why it is advisable to be on the lookout for a ‘Custom’ or ‘Advanced’ options on the installer of your free program. Also, users should be careful for ‘I agree’ options or tick boxes that may say something like ‘Include Alpha Shopper as a free extra!’.
