“Searchfar.net” is a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that after being installed on a computer will attach itself to a browser, change its homepage, new tab page and search engine. The user may be redirected to unwanted sites and will be shown various sponsored results.

Searchfar.net – How Did I Get It?

The “Searchfar.net” PUP usually gets into your computer through third-party installers. It can sneak into your computer without your consent, by concealing itself in freeware installations and bundled packages. In these packages, additional components for installation are not always disclosed properly, and people get tricked into installing potentially unwanted programs such as “Searchfar.net”. Sometimes that can be avoided by clicking on the “Advanced” or “Custom” setting in an installation setup to see what, exactly, will be installed.
Other ways of getting infected are by opening spam emails and downloading e-mail attachments, or by clicking on various ads and banners containing malicious content which may also add a browser extension. You can also get the browser extension and your homepage changed from the official site of the application. The domain name is the same: “Searchfar.net”. Interestingly enough, the browser extension doesn’t seem to be working on Mozilla Firefox when installed via the official domain.

Searchfar.net – More About It

“Searchfar.net” is classified as a browser hijacker. When it is installed on your computer, it may change different browser settings, such as the homepage, new tab and search engine, and may also install a browser extension. You can also get the browser extension and get your homepage changed from the hijacker’s official webpage. All these settings are to make “Searchfar.net” a default search engine and for you to use the “Searchfar.net” domain whenever you try making a search query.

Interesting how the Search engine works with sponsored links most of the time, but when you try typing something popular, it may show no results whatsoever.

If you try searching for something in your browser, the hijacker can display incorrect or no results and sponsored links. You may also be shown advertisements in the form of pop-ups or banners, like the “Make a free registration on Facebook” message, that pops up on many sites to which the hijacker’s sponsored links can redirect you. The sites which you may be redirected to, generate profit when on a pay-per-click basis and they could contain other malicious content to infect your computer.

The EULA of “Searchfar.net” states that it can collect different information about your internet activity and usage such as your search queries, the websites you visited, your IP address, what have you clicked on, what devices and software you are using, your interactions with social networks and other data. From the Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions in the official site, you can find dubious statements. Like, how you cannot get infected with any malware or virus from the content provided to you and how they also, don’t have time and cannot view all the content provided, and anything that happens to your computer is your own responsibility and not their fault.
