Amazon Toolbar – How did I get it?

The Amazon Toolbar is a browser hijacker that either comes bundled with other potentially unwanted programs or is promoted by free installers. Installing freeware programs without clicking the “Advanced” tab and not reading what it may be installed with it, like “Yes, I wan’t Amazon Smart Search to be set as my default homepage“, and this includes not reading the EULA license agreement is the most certain way of getting this browser hijacker.

The setup file of the “Amazon Toolbar” hijacker may also be hidden behind annoying pop-ups that can redirect the user to other malicious third-party sites. Or those pop-ups can promote fake Adobe Flash plug-in updates. Once you agree to install those updates, you are giving your permission to the malicious program to install the “Amazon Toolbar” on your system along with other features like “Amazon Smart Search”.

Amazon Toolbar Browser Hijacker In Detail

The company Amazon has a legitimate “Amazon Toolbar” which is available through their official site for download, although you can also get it via various free programs and site pop-ups. It is actually only a toolbar button we have written about before, called “Amazon 1Button App”.

But After the Amazon Toolbar Browser Hijacker is installed on your system it will set your browser’s homepage to “amazon.com/websearch”add an Amazon Toolbar and make your default search engine to “Amazon Smart Search” which also opens with every single tab. After those features and components are installed, they will automatically invade your current proxy configuration and search settings, meaning that your system preferences will be changed without any prior notification.

The hijacker also starts tracking your activity on the internet. For instance, it collects different data about the web pages you visit, keywords you write in search fields, your download history, and also remembers your IP address. After collecting all needed data, this browser hijacker generates advertisements based on your interests and browsing habits. You may also notice redirects to amazon.com/gp/bit/amazonserp, but by Googling that site, it appears rather safe.
