RiseLimited Adware – How Did I Get Infected?

RiseLimited adware acts like a typical adware. The app belongs to the popular AdLoad family of ad-supported apps for Mac. Other applications belonging to the same family are GeneralProjectSearch and BrowserLaptop. All these programs have been created and then released in the wild with the idea to infect macOS and show lots of bogus adverts.

Probably, the most common method of distribution used by fraudsters is software bundling. Software bundling refers to apps that feature extra programs in their installers. In cases when free apps distribute other undesired programs, they try to install extras without informing people. In fact, their installers are configured to install added apps by default. The problem is that there is no clearly visible information about the presence of extra apps. That’s why it is a good practice to install new apps by using the Advanced/Custom setup step. It may provide some hidden details that will help you to prevent PUPs from running on your Mac.

Different free apps promoted as useful can contain undesired apps in their installers. Such apps may be uploaded to third-party websites or torrent networks:

RiseLimited adware may have been presented to you as a fake Adobe Flash Player update. A webpage designed as the one shown below might have tried to trick you into believing that the fake message aims to help you update an outdated app installed on your macOS:

RiseLimited PUP – What Does It Do?

The access that RiseLimited PUP obtains to your macOS may help it to initiate several modifications that affect installed web browsers. Some main browser preferences may be changed by the adware. The homepage, new tab page and default search may be all set to open new destination like Yahoo Search.

The software may also start to show various intrusive adverts in affected browsers. Types of ads may include:

  • Interruptive banner ads.
  • Intrusive push notifications.
  • Pop-ups with video and/or sound.
  • Redirects.
  • Changed search results to show ads instead of relevant sites.
  • Highlighted text on the pages you visit.

This program could also be set to install different types of cookies, pixels, web beacons and other trackers:

These trackers can be set to obtain information about your web browser, computer system and browsing activities. Once fraudsters receive data records, they can misuse them for the launch of targeted advertising campaigns. Here is an example list of details that may be harvested by adware and provided to fraudsters:

  • Bookmarked websites.
  • The browsing history from your browser.
  • All searches you have made.
  • IP addresses.
  • What you have visited.
  • Mouse movements.
  • Mouse clicks.

Is RiseLimited a Virus?

RiseLimited is not a malicious app for Mac. Hence, it is not a virus for Mac. At the same time, this program could be used by its operators for malicious purposes. RiseLimited adware could show advertisements that link to poorly secured, untrustworthy, or risky websites.

This is the main reason why this program has been classified as an indirect threat to your Mac and should be removed from it.
