Search-Mode Adware – How Did I Get Infected?

The behavior of Search-Mode adware has several specific traits that make it very similar to applications like LocatorUpdate and GuideService. All of the mentioned apps belong to the AdLoad family of ad-supported apps for macOS. All of the programs are designed to do one and the same thing – show a lot of ads on computers they infect.

Several methods can deliver these applications on your Mac. One of them is called software bundling. Hence, you could encounter this program in the installers of various others free apps. Actually, you may have recently download and installed one such app. The app may be offered by a third-party website or a torrent file:

Search-Mode may have also ended up on your Mac after you downloaded a fake Adobe Flash Player update. A webpage designed as the one shown below might have tried to trick you into believing in its fake message that aims to persuade you to grant the PUP access to your Mac:

Search-Mode PUP – What Does It Do?

Once Search-Mode ends up on your Mac it modifies the settings of installed web browsers by changing some of their main settings. The homepage, new tab page and default search may be altered by the PUP. Another side effect that may be registered is the display of many different ads like the following:

  • Pop-ups with video and/or sound.
  • Changed search results to show ads instead of relevant sites.
  • Highlighted text on the pages you visit.
  • Redirects.
  • Interruptive banner ads.
  • Intrusive push notifications.

This program could also be set to install different types of cookies, pixels, web beacons and other trackers:

mac cookies

These trackers can get information about your browsing activity and provide it to fraudsters/hackers. Here is an example list of details that may be harvested by the adware and the trackers it uses:

  • The browsing history from your browser.
  • All searches you have made.
  • What you have visited.
  • Mouse movements.
  • Mouse clicks.
  • IP addresses.
  • Bookmarked websites.

Is Search-Mode a Virus?

Search-Mode is not a malicious Mac virus that will make the system crash. But it could be used for malicious purposes by its operators or hackers who know how to exploit it. Such an event makes it an app dangerous for your Mac. Furthermore, Search-Mode adware could show advertisements that link to poorly secured, unreliable, or risky websites.

This is the main reason why this program has been classified as an indirect threat to your Mac and should be removed from it.
