Corpef Mac Trojan – What Does It Do?
Corpef is part of the recent wave of Trojans, infecting Macs, from which the Jahlav, Icefog and Lador threats belong.
Just like other typical malware, Corpef uses similar methods to cause an infection on your Mac. One of those methods is if this malware is sent to you as an e-mail attachment. Such e-mail attachment can pretend that they are this extremely important document and you should open it immediately. They may seem very convincing as the e-mails may pretend the virus file attached is an invoice for a purchase you don’t recall making or anything other that is very important and you have to open it.
But Corpef may also infect your Mac in case you have deliberately downloaded it, thinking it is a legitimate program of some sort, from the likes of patch, installer, crack, portable app and others. It may even pretend to be an app itself and as soon as you grant it permissions, the infection on your macOS commences.
The main activity that Corpef is related to involves stealing information. But it may be programmed to do a lot more than just that:
- Steal saved passwords.
- Get your files.
- Delete files and other information.
- Edit files.
- Take screenshots.
- Record audio.
- Create copies of itself to make it harder to manually delete.
- Run a process in Activity Monitor to constantly monitor your keystrokes (what you type).
- Get your system information.
- Install other malware.
These are also the primary reasons to consider removing Corpef malware if you believe it is the threat infecting your Mac.
