The French Prime Minister’s office declared on Monday that several government agencies had fallen victim to severe cyberattacks of “intense” magnitude, commencing late Sunday night. While the precise nature of these assaults remains unconfirmed, indications point towards distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks as the probable culprit.
Intense Attacks against the French Government
The French government characterized the attacks as utilizing familiar technical tactics but with an unprecedented level of intensity. DDoS attacks, although incapable of stealing information, possess the capacity to disrupt access to network resources by flooding servers with spurious requests.
Despite being relatively rudimentary in execution, DDoS incidents have, in certain cases, been linked to state-sponsored threat groups. However, the attacks’ basic simplicity usually means they cannot keep causing problems for a long time or locate ways to penetrate the targeted networks.
Such attacks have been associated with groups expressing solidarity with Russia amidst its conflict with Ukraine. Researchers speculate that some of these groups may receive external backing. However, it should be noted that the French government refrained from attributing the weekend’s incident to any specific attacker or country.
The targets of these attacks over the weekend encompassed various governmental services, as per a statement from the prime minister’s office. It remains uncertain whether the assaults were confined solely to the public-facing websites utilized by the French government.
In response to the events, the prime minister’s office disclosed the activation of a “crisis cell” tasked with implementing countermeasures. They further assured that, for most services, the impact of the attacks had been mitigated, with access to state websites duly restored.
