FunSearchToday Redirect – Why is it in My Browser Programs?

The FunSearchToday redirect is a newly reported threat which is categorized both as a hacker-controlled landing page and a browser hijacker. This is a hacker-controlled portal that appears as a legitimate and useful service. Such plugins are created for the most popular web browsers and are usually uploaded to the official repositories, file-sharing networks (BitTorrent), or popular download portals. The hackers use fake or stolen credentials in order to manipulate the victims into installing and running it.

NOTE: This guide refers to the virus-containing instances of the redirect. There may be a legitimate service called this name which is not seen as malicious in nature.

The virus-installation code can also be included in payload carriers which are various types of
files — one of the common ways is the use of macro-infected office documents — they can be made in the most common file formats. When run they will present a prompt that will ask the victims to enable the built-in code. This will trigger the virus delivery. The other common file is the use of application installers — they are created by taking the original setup from their official sources and adding in the necessary code.

As soon as a given hijacker or relevant virus code is executed on a given computer a hacker-controlled portal will be shown. The way the FunSearchToday redirect is displayed to the users is by looking like a legitimate and useful web service. By doing so the redirect will manipulate the users into thinking that they can rely on it. Commonly this will lead to application changes — This includes values such as the default home page, search engine, and new tabs page. As a result of this whenever the victims open their web browsers they will visit this hacker-controlled portal.

As soon as the site is visited tracking cookies will be deployed to the victims, they will monitor the behavior of the users and report it back to the hackers. Other consequences will include the following, as observed in other similar threats:

  • Local Information Gathering — By using the locally installed virus code the malware can be set to extract sensitive data from the infected hosts. This can include both user and system data — as a result, hackers can conduct both identity theft and financial abuse crimes.
  • System Changes — The locally installed agent can edit sensitive files and configuration values which can lead to a persistent virus installation. This means that the threat will be executed once the computer is powered on. Performance issues can also be encountered, this can render the computer unusable.
  • Additional Virus Installation –Through this redirect the hackers can program the automatic deployment of other commonly installed threats. When web-based infections are concerned this can include cryptocurrency miners which are scripts that can be executed from within the browsers themselves. They will retrieve and run a series of performance-intensive tasks, their execution may make the computer completely unusable. For every completed and reported task the hackers will receive cryptocurrency assets directly in their digital wallets.
  • Intrusive Content Display — Many redirect sites and related web-based threats opt to display phishing content, the most common form is the presentation of fake login forms and pop-ups. They are disguised as well-known services or companies and will request the login credentials of the victims. If the data is entered then the hackers will use it to overtake the services. The hackers can also choose to show intrusive ads which can be placed in pop-ups, banners, text links and etc. Every interaction will generate a small amount of income for the controllers.

The FunSearchToday Redirect like any other malware of this category can change at any time. For this reason, we recommend that every identified virus is removed as quickly as possible in order to prevent further damage to the computers.
