Price Expert is a browser extension that is designed to assist users as they shop online. The application displays a variety of advertisements in the form of deals, coupons, price comparisons, banners, etc. in the web pages visited by the user. Although Price Expert is not a virus, malware experts classify it as PUP (potentially unwanted program) because of the risks involved in targeted advertisement.
Is Price Expert a Threat?
The browser add-on is not of malicious nature and cannot pose a direct threat to your system. However, the displayed marketing materials may interrupt your browsing activities, slow down the performance of your browser or link you to potentially unsafe web locations.
Since the application does not assume liability for the content of the promoted websites, the user takes full responsibility for any actions that derive from visiting them. In many cases, such pages can serve as a gateway to malware infiltration and lead to serious security issues.
The main purpose of such adware programs is to generate pay-per-click revenue and boost the web traffic of certain third party websites. Malware experts warn that clicking on the advertised services and products may make your system vulnerable to further threats.
To serve relevant marketing content, Price Expert may track some personally non-identifiable information on the affected machine (IP address, location, search queries, visited websites, duration of the browsing sessions). The collected data can be used for the purposes of targeted advertising or get shared with interested parties.
How Does Price Expert Enter the System?
The application is available for download online. It may also end up in the system without the user’s consent, as a part of freeware bundle. The “bundling” is often employed by software developers to cover financial losses, so if you want to prevent stealth installations, select the Advanced options and un-check any additional apps, add-ons or plug-ins that come with the initially downloaded software.
The advertisements by Price Expert can be pushed in the commonly used web browsers – Chrome, Explorer, and Firefox.
