Users have been complaining about a suspicious browser extension that generated unwanted advertisements. It is called DiscountExt and is considered an ad-supported add-on for Google Chrome. Other browsers may also be affected by DiscountExt. Once installed, it may start generating annoying ads in the form of pop-ups and banners. Some of the displayed content may be about Windows errors found in the system. The ad may say ‘DiscountExt – Click to Continue”.
Clicking anything brought by DiscountExt is not considered safe since adware is known to cause unsafe browser redirects. Cleaning the system is recommended.
Description of DiscountExt
Ad-supported extensions may be triggered by several factors. One way to distribute them across the Web is by including them in various freeware/ shareware packages. The procedure is called software bundling and can be avoided by executing advanced/ custom installation.
Another possible way for DiscountExt to have entered the system is when the user landed an infected page. Infected pages may often be legitimate – cyber criminals are known to target well-known websites to spread malware, adware, and spyware. However, the visited website may have been of a suspicious nature. To avoid any problems, keeping the AV tool intact and frequently updated is very important. If such a program is not present at the moment, downloading one to scan and clean the system is recommended.
→Even though DiscountExt is not classified as a malicious threat, it can make the PC more vulnerable to other cyber threats. That is why its removal is advisory.
The consequences of having adware running in the background of system include:
- Data collection – personally identifiable and non-identifiable information may be harvested with the help of tracking cookies.
- Unsafe browser redirects to predefined pages.
- Browser performance issues. Adware may take advantage of various browser vulnerabilities.
