TorrentLocker Ransomware Resume
TorrentLocker is one of the biggest and most dangerous ransomware families we have seen in action during the last couple of years. TorrentLocker is also known as Win32/Filecoder.DI. It got its name from a blog post by iSIGHT Partners published in the summer of 2014.
Typically, TorrentLocker encrypts the victim’s files via AES-256 encryption algorithm and requests a payment in Bitcoin. Average payment is up to 4.081Bitcoins (approximately US$1500), as reported by researchers at ESET.
Till the end of 2014, the malicious coders behind TorrentLocker have generated about $300,000 from ransom payments. The sum has surely multiplied. Researchers suspect that TorrentLocker is from the same family as Hesperbot banking malware. Targeted countries include Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Ireland, France, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom.
The first TorrentLocker attack was registered in Turkey in February 2014. That is when Turkish users received emails from Turkcell (Turkish mobile operato) and were tricked into visiting a fake Turkcell page. Expectedly, the website was crafted to host a malicious document for downloading. Back then, the threat wasn’t identified by name. Later it was dubbed TorrentLocker to differentiate it from the other ransomware attacks. The name originates from the first registry key which had the word ‘Torrent’ in it. Here it is:

Since the moment it was released in the wild, TorrentLocker has evolved quite a lot. Changes include how the ransom message is presented to the user, as well as alterations in its cryptography methods. However, the distribution method has stayed the same – attackers disguise as local service providers and redirect them to malicious website containing documents to be downloaded. There were also infection cases of malicious Word files which contained bad macros.

How did it happen?
Upon infection, TorrentLocker will harvest any possible email addresses listed in address books from Thunderbird, Outlook and Windows Live Mail. Investigation carried by Fox IT indicates that at least 2.6 million email addresses were harvested by the hacking team.
TorrentLocker pretending to be CryptoLocker
The creators of the ransomware family have been seen to impersonate CryptoLocker and apply its name on the ransom message and the payment website. Many ransomware threats have been pretending to be CryptoLocker.

The ‘CryptoLocker’ payment page is hosted on the Tor network. However, the command and control server used for communication with the ransomware from the victim’s PC is not hosted on the Tor network.
TorrentLocker Network Activity
The communication with the command&control server is in HTTPS. Over the C&C server the encryption key is sent along with the number of encrypted files, the ransom message, list of harvested emails and possibly crash logs.
TorrentLocker File-system Activity
Here is a list of all the malicious activities done by the ransomware (apart from locking targeted files):
- The threat can make a copy of itself to a secure location where it will be present upon reboot.
- Display a ransom message with instructions on the payment in Bitcoins only.
- Display a ransom screen with payment information, how to get the needed bitcoins and where to send them. Some of the screens may not have a deadline.
How to stay protected against ransomware attacks?
Finally, we have compiled a list of actions that will descrease the possibility of a ransomware infection:
- Make sure to use additional firewall protection. Downloading a second firewall (like ZoneAlarm, for example) is an excellent solution for any potential intrusions.
- Make sure that your programs have less administrative power over what they read and write on your computer. Make them prompt you admin access before starting.
- Use stronger passwords. Stronger passwords (preferably ones that are not words) are harder to crack by several methods, including brute forcing since it includes pass lists with relevant words.
- Turn off AutoPlay. This protects your computer from malicious executable files on USB sticks or other external memory carriers that are immediately inserted into it.

- Configure your mail server to block out and delete suspicious file attachment containing emails.
- If you have a compromised computer in your network, make sure to isolate immediately it by powering it off and disconnecting it by hand from the network.
- Make sure to educate all of the users on the network never to open suspicious file attachments, show them examples.
- Employ a virus-scanning extension in your browser that will scan all the downloaded files on your computer.
- Turn off any non-needed wireless services, like Infrared ports or Bluetooth – hackers love to use them to exploit devices. In case you use Bluetooth, make sure that you monitor all of the unauthorized devices that prompt you to pair with them and decline and investigate any suspicious ones.
