.coma Virus File – How Did It Infect My PC?

The .coma virus is a recent sample that originates from the DCRTR family of ransomware. As it is probably a modified version of a previous malware it is suspected that the same infection strategies will be used. The majority of viruses of this category are delivered via various sites, scripts and other files. In rare occasions single virus infected files can be used to carry the virus. Other methods alternatively rely on the preparation of bundle malware carriers which can be application installers of well-known applications or macro-infected documents (across all popular file formats). All of them are designed to appear as data that is commonly used by end users — suitable file names and images will be integrated alongside them to coerce the victims into executing them.

All malware carriers of the .coma virus can be advertised on phishing sites and email messages which are designed to impersonate well-known services and companies. They can include images and content that may be hijacked from them and also hosted on such domain names. To further manipulate the victims into thinking that these are safe places to visit and download files the hackers can also include self-signed security certificates.

The .coma virus related data and infected files can also be uploaded to file-sharing networks and also over at different online communities: social networks, chat rooms, forums and etc. The criminals can use both fake identities or create ones for the occasion.

In some cases the .coma virus can be carried in what are known as browser hijackers — these are malicious extensions which are created for the most popular web browsers. When they are run they will execute malware actions which include the installation of the virus.

.coma Virus File – What Does It Do To My Computer?

The .coma virus will execute various tasks which will be run as soon as the threat is started. As it is based on the DCRTR ransomware it can include a complex behavior sequence which can be based on the local machine conditions or the hacker-issued instructions.

At the start of the infection data harvesting will be started. This can include personal user information — data that can expose their identity and lead to other crimes such as identity abuse and financial abuse. This module can be used to also extract machine information, the report will be used to create an unique ID which can be used to differentiate between the contaminated hosts.

This information can be used to scan if there are any installed security services and bypass or delete them. This can be followed by various system changes:

  • Windows Registry Changes — The main ransomware engine can be programmed to create, edit and delete Windows Registry values. This can lead to severe performance issues, data loss and unexpected errors.
  • Boot Options Modifications — The virus can edit boot and recovery options. This will make it so that the ransomware will be launched when the computer is powered on and will also block access to the recovery options.
  • Malware Infections — Additional malware code can be deployed. Possible options include remote control Trojans, dangerous web browser extensions and others.

When all included actions have completed running the actual file encryption will run. Like previous versions of the DCRTR ransomware a built-in list of target file type extensions will be used to direct the encryption module. A very strong cipher will process the files: multimedia files, archives, backups, documents and etc.

In the end the .coma extension will be applied to the target files. The users will then be blackmailed to pay a decryption fee through a ransom note or a lockscreen.
