.FUSION Virus File – How Did It Infect My PC and What Happened?

The .FUSION virus is a NEFILIM ransomware variant that is being distributed against computer users. Like some of the previous versions, this has been used to plan dangerous attacks against computer users worldwide. At this time there is no information available about the hacking group that is behind it. It is possible that criminal groups that have created previous samples by modifying the previous configurations. Alternatively, other hackers may have created this new version by using the already available code.

Whatever the case popular infection tactics can be used, usually they will be in line as to what has been used before. Usually the virus carriers will be documents among the most popular file types that have integrated scripts. Usually, when such data has opened a prompt will be shown asking for the commands to be run by users. This is done by implying that this is necessary to correctly open the documents and show the content. A similar alternative is the creation of the so-called application bundle installers — these are program setup guides that have been created by embedding the virus scripts in them. The software that is chosen is usually commonly downloaded and run by the victims from the Internet.

All virus files can be distributed to the target users by using manipulative tactics — they will attempt to fake notifications, letters, and well-known sites. Common forms are the email messages (prepared usually in templates and sent in bulk) and the hacker-created websites. Both of them can be hosted on domain names that sound very familiar and legitimate. Other methods include the use of file-sharing networks which are very popular for spreading virus-infected files.

As soon as the virus is started on a given computer, the built-in mechanism will start the sequence that is programmed by the hackers. Depending on the individual configuration this can start different activities, including a startup security bypass — it will scan the compromised system for any installed programs of this category and disable them. In some cases, they can even be totally removed from the computer. This step allows for further system modifications and running of actions.

What may follow-up is the running of information gathering actions — the virus engine will search for and hijack personal users files and system information. It can be used to generate a unique identifier for each computer or for crimes like identity theft or financial abuse. This may be connected to the installation of other malware. Usually, such threats can lead to the deployment of Trojan horse infections — small-size agents that establish a secure connection to hacker-controlled servers, allowing them access to the hosted files and to spy on the victims.

Other NEFILIM versions like the.FUSION virus may also be programmed to carry out system changes. This can include the boot options — the malware can be programmed to install the virus to automatically start when the computer is powered on. On another note, this includes the creation and editing of the Windows Registry values: this can lead to severe performance issues, data loss, unexpected errors, and the inability to run certain services.

The NEFILIM virus will run the final encryption procedure when the other modules have finished running. This is done by using a very powerful cipher against a list of target file type extensions: common ones are backups, archives, documents, multimedia files, and etc. All of the target files will receive the relevant .FUSION extension. Like the previous iterations, a ransom note will be generated to blackmail the victims into paying the hackers a given decryption fee. This file is called FUSION-README.txt and will be placed in folders where there are encrypted data.
