.honor Virus File – How Did It Infect My Computer?

The .honor virus is a derivative threat from the VoidCrypt ransomware family that has produced numerous threats throughout the years. In this particular version, the attacks have been discovered to originate from an unknown hacking group, leading us to believe that there may be no direct connection between this and former viruses of this family. We anticipate that common infection methods are to be used by the hacking group to deliver the infections to their targets. As we have observed in the previous VoidCrypt threats, usually the criminals will use a fake identity and different types of manipulative tactics.

Virus-infected files are widely used against computer users. The most common types are the macro-infected documents and the application installers of popular programs. The documents include scripts that will open a pop-up window and ask the users to enable the built-in commands. The users will be led into believing that this is required to correctly view the contents of the documents: for this reason that are deemed as very effective. Many of these documents can be crafted in the most popular formats: presentations, databases, text documents, and spreadsheets. On the other hand, the software installers are created by taking the original setup bundles of popular software and inserting the relevant virus code.

Virus data is commonly delivered to the target users by making it available online using the mentioned-before fake identities. This can include the sending out of email messages (based on templates) and the creation of hacker-controlled websites. The web sites may appear as legitimate versions of well-known services and companies. They can be hosted on similar-sounding domain names and may include fake or stolen content to make the visitors believe they are real and safe to use.

The .honor virus will likely launch a series of built-in modules that are governed by the recorded behavior by the criminals. We assume that this will follow the typical approach of starting with a data gathering module: the collection of personal users files and system information. This can be used for crimes related to the identity of the victims or services they use. Collected system data can be processed by another process to create an individual identifier for each host. It may be presented in the ransom note or used to count the number of infected hosts.

Many ransomware threats like the .honor virus will start different types of system changes. This can include the installation of the virus as a persistent infection — the malware will start every time the computer is powered on and may also disable access to some of the system recovery options. Modifications can also impact the Windos Registry — any changes that are made to the entries will lead to performance issues, the inability to run certain system services, and overall unexpected errors and data loss. Viruses like .honor may delete important files such as backups and operating system-related data.

The .honor virus infection can also be used to install other types of malware, such as Trojan horse infections. They install a local agent that connects to a hacker-controlled server, allowing the criminals to spy on the victims, steal their files, and take over control.

When all relevant modules complete running, the final encryption phase will start. This is done by using a very powerful cipher to process target user’s data. This action is governed according to a built-in list of target file type extensions. They can be documents, archives, multimedia files, backups, and etc. All of them will receive the relevant . honor extension. A wallpaper, ransom note -,or lockscreen instance will be run to blackmail the victims into paying the hackers a decryption fee to restore access to their data.
