BB Virus

BB virus – a strain of the well-known MedusaLocker ransomware, can reach your PC with the techniques like malspam, freeware installers, and websites’ corruption.

Malspam is considered to be the main technique as massive spam email campaigns can reach many people. Email messages known to be part of such campaigns try to trick people to download malicious software. This software may be presented as an important document attached to the email or a clickable link/button.

Once launched on a PC, the BB virus initiates an infection process in the background of all other running apps. To complete its attack to the end, the ransomware applies malicious system changes that disrupt the overall PC security.

When the BB ransomware reaches the main infection stage – data encryption, it runs a special built-in cipher module. During this stage, the PC starts to perform slower and unusual freezes may occur as well.

To encrypt files, BB ransomware scans all drives for commonly used types of files different than the system files. It needs to avoid encoding system files as this will interrupt the attack.

When it transforms the code of target files, the latter remain unusable until their code is reverted back to the original state. The ransomware could encrypt files, which are from the following file types:

  • Audio files.
  • Video files.
  • Document files.
  • Image files.
  • Backup files.
  • Banking credentials, etc.

You can recognize encrypted files by the malicious .BB extension that stands next to their original names. At last, the BB ransomware will present you with a file called Recovery_Instructions.html. This file contains a ransom message that attempts to extort a ransom fee for the .BB files’ decryptor. Here is a copy of its text:
