.moresa Files Virus – How Does It Infect and What Does It Do?

Analyses conducted by the security researcher Michael Gillespie indicate that the so-called .moresa files virus is yet another strain of

STOP/ Djvu ransomware. Like its predecessors, .moresa is designed to corrupt computer systems and encode valuable user files in order to extort ransom payment from its victims.

At this point, there is no official information about the infection vectors used by .moresa STOP ransomware. However, it is likely that payload files that trigger the attack are mainly spread via spam email messages. These messages attempt to trick you into downloading the payload on your device. The malicious code is usually hidden in a file attachment or a link to a corrupted web page. Attached files could be presented as:

  • Invoices coming from reputable sites, like PayPal, eBay, etc.
  • Documents from that appear to be sent from your bank.
  • An online order confirmation note.
  • Receipt for a purchase.
  • Others.

When first started on your PC .moresa files virus attempts to evade detection by checking for active security measures. Afterwards, the threat establishes additional malicious files in some of the following system folders:

  • %Roaming%
  • %Windows%
  • %AppData%
  • %Local%
  • %Temp%

With the help of these files .moresa ransomware performs many malicious operations that enable it to plague essential system settings. It may obtain administrative rights, gather specific system details, connect to a remote server, transfer data and ensure its persistent presence. For achieving the last, the threat interferes with Windows registries like RUN and RUNONCE. Since these two registry keys manage the automatic execution of main system and applications’ files, ransomware like .moresa often misuse their functionalities in order to become able to load on every system start.

The moment .moresa files virus reaches the main attack stage which is data encryption it utilizes two sophisticated cipher algorithms to encode target files and restrict the access to their data. Following encryption, the names of all corrupted files are marked with the extension .moresa Unfortunately, it is likely that all common files that are listed below are among the targets of this nasty ransomware:

  • Audio files
  • Video files
  • Document files
  • Image files
  • Backup files
  • Banking credentials, etc

In addition to the encryption capabilities, the ransomware has recently been added the feature to install a particular password-stealing Trojan known as Azorult (

AZORult). AZORult is an information stealer and downloader designed to harvest various sensitive details from the systems it compromises. So once .moresa virus activates it on your machine, it becomes able to obtain various types of data such as account credentials, desktop files, cryptocurrency wallets, browser history, Skype message history, and others. When harvested, your data is uploaded to a remote server. Be advised to change the passwords of all accounts you actively use as soon as possible.

Finally, the threat drops a text file that contains a specific message. Considering the main purpose of this message we could call it a ransom message. Once you open it you may be presented with the following text:

ATTENTION!
Don’t worry my friend, you can return all your files!
