RTGF Virus – How Did I Get Infected?

Rtgf virus is very similar to the other versions of this family of threats, like the recently detected .bbbw, .ckae and .bbbr and .avyu variants.

Just like this, the virus may also end up on your computer system without your actual consent or knowledge, preferably by one of the following main methods that have been the reasons of recent reports:

  • By being downloaded from a shady site.
  • If it is sent to you as an e-mail attachment or a URL.

If you have received the virus in the form of an email attachment, then the most often types of files that pretends to be a legitimate and important documents, for example:

  • Work-related files.
  • Receipts.
  • Invoices.
  • E-Tickets for events or flights.

These documents very often contain malicious macro codes that triggered the following infection process after their Bing downloaded and opened on your computer system:

Rtgf virus may also infect you by pretending to be some type of a file that you may have recently downloaded on your computer system, such as the following:

  • Self extracting archives or regular archives.
  • Fake installation files.
  • Software patches.
  • Cracked portable versions of apps.
  • Software or game cracks.
  • Key generator (or Keygen).

Rtgf Virus – What Does It Do?

Rtgf virus may initially connected to a remote host, from where it downloads all of its malicious files, that are required for each activity on your computer system. This is all done in the background without you realising and happens in a matter of seconds. The files may be of different kinds and under different, often random names and they could be located in the following Windows directories:

  • %LocalLow%
  • %Windows%
  • %SystemDrive%
  • %AppData%
  • %Local%

Rtgf virus likely also attacks your Windows Registries, more particularly by creating entries in the following registry sub-keys:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

What Are .rtgf Files

The .rtgf files are encoded using the AES encryption algorithm – sophisticated encryption form, that makes it very tough to crack the files and reverse them back to their original working state. What the virus does is it scans for the most commonly used files, based on their file types and encrypts them, for example the following:

  • Audio (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Picture file kinds (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Videos (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Archive file formats (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Documents of different types (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Others.

After the virus is done with your files, it generates one of two types of decryption keys – online or offline. The files are left looking like the example below shows:
