Scarab-Turkish Virus – Distribution Ways

The Scarab-Turkish variant of the Scarab ransomware family is being distributed against users using the common tactics we have already seen in previous iterations.

One of the main methods is the use of email SPAM messages wherein the users receive messages that appear to be sent by legitimate companies. By utilizing social engineering tactics the criminals use hijacked elements from famous companies or services that are used to construct fake password reminders, notifications or login pages. When the users interact with them they may either directly download the Scarab-Turkish virus sample or redirect them to a page that contains a link to it.

A related is the creation of fake download sites — they represent fake copies of well-known Internet portals or download pages. They are constructed in a similar manner and along with the email messages are the main method for distributing infected payloads. There are two main types:

  • Documents — The criminals can send out documents that can take different forms containing malicious scripts (macros): text files, spreadsheets, presentations and databases. As soon as they are opened a notification message will appear asking the users to enable them. If this is done the virus infection sequence will be started.
  • Software Setup Packages — The criminals can take the legitimate installers of famous software that is often downloaded by end users and modify them with the Scarab-Turkish virus code. They are then uploaded to the hacker-operated download sites. Usually popular software is chosen: creativity suites, system utilities and productivity apps.

In certain cases the Scarab-Turkish virus can infect victim hosts via browser hijackers. They represent malicious plugins made for the most popular web browsers that are advertised as adding new useful features and etc. The most common place to find them is the official plugin repository for the associated browser. Usually the hackers use fake developer credentials and user reviews in order to manipulate the users into installing it.

Scarab-Turkish Virus – In-Depth Analysis

The Scarab-Turkish variant of the Scarab ransomware family follows the same behavior patterns as those of earlier strains.

The hackers behind it bundle instructions for each hacker-controlled campaign. Most common threats start with the data harvesting module. It is programmed into revealing sensitive information that is grouped into two main groups. The first group is responsible for disclosing personal user data which can be used to reveal the victim’s identity. The target strings include their real name, aliases, address, phone number, location, interests and account credentials. The other group of data is responsible for the campaign metrics — information that can be used to optimize the attacks. It usually consists of data about the victim’s installed hardware components and certain operating system values.

This data can be used by the stealth protection module which can scan the system for security measures that can interfere with the virus’s correct execution. This includes any anti-virus hosts, sandbox/debug environments and virtual machine hosts.

Following the successful infiltration the Scarab-Turkish strain it can be configured to commit various system changes. A list of the possible modifications include the following:

  • Windows Registry Entries Changes — The Scarab-Turkish virus can be instructed into modifying existing Windows Registry entries belonging both to the operating system and the end-user applications. This behavior can disable certain functions from working properly and cause overall system performance issues.
  • Persistent Threat — The Scarb-Turkish can be installed as a persistent threat. This means that the malicious module will be started every time the computer boots thereby disabling certain modules. This behavior has been observed to prevent users from entering the boot recovery menu which prevents the use of manual recovery instructions.
  • Trojan Module Installation — Some Scarab ransomware threats can install a Trojan horse module. It connects to a hacker-controlled server which can be used to spy on the victims, take over control of their machines and deploy other viruses.

Other components can be added at any time as the malware can communicate with the servers at any time. In certain configurations the strain can make data recovery difficult by deleting the Shadow Volume Copies and System Restore data. In this case the users will need to use a professional-grade data recovery software, refer to our instructions for more information.

Scarab-Turkish Virus — Encryption

The Scarab-Turkish virus strain follows the same encryption procedure as the last versions of the ransomware family. It uses a built-in list of target file data that is encrypted with a strong cipher. The list typically targets the following data types:

  • Archives
  • Documents
  • Images
  • Videos
  • Music
  • Backups
  • Databases

Like all prior Scarab ransomware it assigns an extension based on the hacker’s email address – the generic identifier is the .[email] extension, where the value is replaced with the criminal collective’s contact address. The current email is firmabilgileri@bk.ru which translates to the .[firmabilgileri@bk.ru] extension.

Instead of instantly displaying the ransomware note or lockscreen right after the encryption engine has completed it, it performs a region check. If the computer is not configured with a Turkish location setting it will block the PC. Otherwise it creates a ransomware note called HOW TO RECOVER ENCRYPTED FILES.TXT which reads the following:

Not all variants of this ransomware can be decrypted for free, but we have added the decryptor used by researchers that is often updated with the variants which become eventually decrypted. You can try and decrypt your files using the instructions below, but if they do not work, then unfortunately your variant of the ransomware virus is not decryptable.

Follow the instructions below to use the Emsisoft decrypter and decrypt your files for free. You can download the Emsisoft decryption tool linked here and then follow the steps provided below:

1 Right-click on the decrypter and click on Run as Administrator as shown below:

stop ransomware decryptor step 1

Note: Credit for the decryptor goes to Emsisoft researchers who have made the breakthrough with this virus.

Method 2: Use data recovery software

Ransomware infections and Scarab-Turkish aim to encrypt your files using an encryption algorithm which may be very difficult to decrypt. This is why we have suggested a data recovery method that may help you go around direct decryption and try to restore your files. Bear in mind that this method may not be 100% effective but may also help you a little or a lot in different situations.

1. Download the recommended Data Recovery software by clicking on the link underneath:

Simply click on the link and on the website menus on the top, choose Data Recovery - Data Recovery Wizard for Windows or Mac (depending on your OS), and then download and run the tool.
