The Instagram account of Telethon, a 2-day-charity-event in West Australia raising funds for children, was taken over by an unidentified person. The sum raised this year is $22.2million.
Just after the end of the event, the official Instagram profile of Telethon was hijacked. The person behind the attack is unidentified. Experts believe that the hijacker has guessed the password to the account. And since the 2FA authentication protection was not enabled, the content was accessed without any difficulties.
As long as the account was accessed, the attacker has deleted all pictures posted for the fundraiser event. This caused a major loss of popularity of the Instagram profile for the event, losing 1 000 followers by Monday.
Supporters of the event helped in the process of regaining control over the hijacked account. They have contacted the owners with the password. It is hoped that the revived Instagram account will now have a stronger countersign and enabled 2FA.
