Yogynicof Virus – How Does It Infect?

The Yogynicof ransomware is a new file encrypting virus that has been recently detected in an ongoing attack campaign targeting computer victims worldwide. It still under active analysis by security experts as the hackers are unknown, as well as the general intention of the intrusions.

Like other malware of this category ransomware are distributed using common infection mechanisms. The most effective and popular way is to confuse the users into installing the virus code. It can be placed in different type of carrier files, many of which can be spread to the users in the form documents (across all popular formats), as well as application installers of popular software.

The virus-infected data can then be distributed to the end users via phishing strategies. They are designed to impersonate messages and notifications that appear as being sent by legitimate services and companies. The usual forms are email messages and hacker-created sites. All of them mayh insert or directly attach the virus files and when the users click on them the infection will be triggered.

A related mechanism is the creation of web browser hijackers which are malicious extensions for popular web browsers. They commonly installed by browsing to third-party repositories, hacker-controlled sites and even on the official stores by using fake or stolen developer credentials. Smaller executables that can have the virus included in them can be in the form of patches, software updates or “cracks”

Yogynicof Virus – What Does It Do To Your Computer?

When the Yogynicof virus is installed on a given computer it will start the built-in infection sequence. It can be controlled according to the local machine conditions or the hacker specific rules.

As the collected samples the Yogynicof ransomware is still not analyzed entirely as only a few samples have been collected. One of the collected samples shows how a virus intrudes onto a given computer. It will create a guarded memory region into which the ransomware will inject itself into. From there on it will run all other actions as intended — for example the information scan will be done afterwards. The information retrieval can be divided into two main categories: machine information and private user information. This can be used to generate an unique ID according to the collected report. The private user information can be used for various other crimes such as identity theft.

The collected information can also be searched for remote desktop credentials which are used to login remotely to the infected computers.

The Yogynicof ransomware will also be able to determine the region and language support of the installed host. Alongside the collected information this can be used by the virus creators to show in which region the malare is most succesful.

When it has gained access to the file system the virus will be able to access all system and user files. This can also be extended to any removable devices or network shares.

This is potentially very dangerous as the hackers can easily update the core files to include a worm spreading model which can automatically infect other computers on the same network. The virus will also hook up to running processes which can be used to harvest data entered into forms and fields by the victims.

When everything has finished running the actual file encryption will be run. Like other threats of this category a built-in list of target data will be encrypted. They will be locked and renamed, so that the computer users will not be able to access them. The Yogynicof ransomware will encrypt user files and not add in a specific extension at this point.

The user swill notice a lot of HTML files created in a particular sequence such as the following: Read-me! 0 .html, Read-me! 1 .html, Read-me! 2 .html and so on. They contain the ransom note which includes the instructions to the affected users.
