What Is Acepy Virus?

Acepy Ransomware Virus removal guide

Acepy is a data locker ransomware that encodes valuable files stored on computer systems it reaches. The virus drops its ransom note to extort a ransom payment from its victims. Essential system settings will remain impacted for as long as the ransomware is running on the system as well. Since the requested ransom is very likely to support future cybercriminals’ activities, you will support their next malicious campaigns if you decide to pay the ransom fee. Furthermore, you have no guarantee that they will send you a working decryption tool. Ransomware Virus – How Does It Infect PCs?

The ransomware Acepy may infect computer systems by using the help of:

  • Files, apps, updates or torrent files available for free download on various websites.
  • Questionable landing pages set to download and execute ransomware infection directly on computer systems.
  • Email attachments and links presented in legitimate-like email messages.

Let’s reveal more details about the most common distribution technique via malicious spam emails (malspam). If Acepy ransomware tries to infect your PC via an email attachment, then this attachment may be presented as an important document. Being packed with malicious macros, the document can trick you to start the infection without suspecting it. Here is an example of how such an infected document works:

Acepy Virus – What Does It Do?

First, Acepy ransomware establishes a bunch of malicious files on the infected system. With their help, it can reach the data encryption stage. Malicious files that support the complex ransomware attack may hijack legitimate processes in order to hide the threat for as long as possible.

System locations that may be misused by Acepy virus for the storage of harmful files include some essential Windows system directories:

  • %AppData%
  • %Local%
  • %Temp%
  • %LocalLow%

Certain registries in the Windows Registry system component may be noticed as well. Acepy virus could misuse the functionalities of the registry sub-keys listed below to run its files automatically every time you start the infected system. Following directories in the Registry may be infected with malicious strains:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

At last, Acepy cryptovirus drops a files that stores its ransom message. That message tries to convince victims to contact hackers for more information about the recovery of their encrypted .acepy files. It is kept by the file ACEPY_README.txt and reads the following:

All your files have been encrypted by Acepy Ransomware!
All your photos, videos, music and documents have been encrypted with the extension “.acepy”.
There’s no way to recover them without the special key. Please contact AcepyRansom@protonmail.com to get it!

.acepy Files

All .acepy files appear as corrupted files. Unfortunately, they remain inaccessible for an unspecified period of time. The encryption module of Acepy virus is designed to scan all directories, besides the system directories of Windows and encodes files that may be of the following kinds:

  • Audio file formats (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Pictures (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Video file types (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Archives (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Document file kinds (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Other types of often used data.

After applying the encryption, the virus will immediately attempt to force you to pay a hefty ransom fee for the recovery of .acepy files. We at SensorsTechForum do not recommend such steps. They are neither secure nor reliable.
