Bing.vc is a search engine, provided by MSYT and believed by some security experts to be a browser hijacker. Bing.vc claims to provide search results, combining other search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and Yandex. We have also identified that the search engine collects different type of information and may work with third parties to display shopping and games ads with redirects to their sites on their website.
Bing.vc – How Does It Work?
The search engine might be installed onto your computer as a result of missing out on a few installation steps when trying to set up freeware software, downloaded from third-party websites. Those sites usually may modify the installers of the free software and may include ‘extras’, such as hoax search engines, adware PUPs, Worms, Viruses and others.
We have looked into Bing.vc and the first detail we have identified is that the search engine uses primarily Bing as its results provider instead of displaying results from its database or at least modified results. Second, we have identified several types of cookies on the site, such as session cookies and active cookies that have a very long expiry date, which were stated to collect different user PC information about the use of the software in their Privacy Policy.
When we looked into the privacy policy, we have noticed that the company claims to aggregate information about the user location, language settings, any user-entered information, etc. and they state that such information will become their property. Also, the company says that they will collect personal information and will provide it for free (do not specify to whom) or in some cases for compensation, which is very suspicious.
When it comes to browser hijackers, the threat level varies. However, it is crucial, to watch out for changed homepage, new tab page or any other web browser settings changes. Also, some browser hijackers may situate registry values in the registries for Windows machines.
Most browser hijackers may be created with the purpose of information trading or displaying targeted adverts for profit. This is where the dangers lie because some of those ads may redirect the user to dangerous third-party websites. Such sites may con the user into entering various information, call expensive ‘Tech Support’ numbers to fix a non-existent problem or even download malicious .exe files on the user PC.
