Microsoft Ends Support for Windows 7, 8.1 in Community Forums

Are you still resisting Windows 10 and running Windows 7 or Windows 8? If that is your case, you should note that, starting July without providing a specific date, Microsoft is planning to no longer participate in the technical support forms meant for Windows 7/8/8.1 RT and several other products.

Microsoft Ends Technical Support Forums for a Range of Products

That’s not all. Microsoft has also stated that it will no longer offer support for Microsoft Security Essentials, Internet Explorer 10, Office 2010 / 2013 effective July. No official support will be available for a range of other products such as Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, Surface RT, Surface 2, Microsoft Band and Zune. Users should note that some forums will be locked, preventing users from helping each other as well.

Since the company hasn’t outlined a specific date for the withdrawal of support for the above-mentioned products, users should expect it at the start of the month. It should also be noted that even though a range of forums will be locked, a lot will remain active without the participation of Microsoft expert representatives.

As for Microsoft Band and Zune, not only Microsoft will not participate in the forums but it will also lock them. There is a recommendation for Band owners to turn to the Microsoft Band 2 forums instead in the cases they need support. In addition, support previously available in the Mobile devices forum will carry on in the Other Windows mobile devices topic.

Here is the official message posted in the Microsoft Community:

Effective July 2018, the Microsoft Community forums listed below will shift support scope and Microsoft staff will no longer provide technical support there. There will be no proactive reviews, monitoring, answering or answer marking of questions. The forums will still be moderated by Microsoft agents to ensure participants can engage in a safe and positive environment.

Microsoft Community participants are welcome and encouraged to continue to use the forum to ask questions and post answers with each other.

In a nutshell, the support for all the products listed below will be suspended across different forums in the Community, as stated by Microsoft:

  • Windows 7, 8.1, 8.1 RT
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Internet Explorer 10
  • Office 2010, 2013
  • Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, Surface RT, Surface 2
  • Microsoft Band – this topic will be locked. Users are invited to participate in Microsoft Band 2 topic.
  • Mobile devices forum – Microsoft support will continue in “Other Windows mobile devices” topic
  • Zune – this topic will be locked, but will remain available for browsing
