MinerSearch Malware – How to Remove It [Fix]

What is MinerSearch?

Your antivirus flagged something called MinerSearch, or you noticed your browser search function has been replaced by an unfamiliar engine, or your CPU is spiking unexpectedly — and now you want to know what MinerSearch is and how to get rid of it completely. Read this article right now before doing anything else. The fix guide at the bottom covers the full cleanup process.

MinerSearch is a dual-threat malware — combining a browser hijacker component that replaces your search engine with a fraudulent one and a cryptomining component that silently uses your device’s CPU and GPU resources to mine cryptocurrency for the attacker. Security researchers document MinerSearch as a PUP that modifies browser settings, redirects searches through its own infrastructure to generate advertising revenue, and simultaneously deploys resource-draining mining scripts that run without your knowledge or consent. The browser hijacker component changes your default search engine, home page, and new tab page — then actively prevents you from reverting these changes through normal browser settings while the malware remains installed. The mining component runs continuously in the background, consuming system resources and causing device overheating, reduced performance, and significantly higher electricity consumption.

How Did MinerSearch Get on My System?

MinerSearch arrives through deceptive installation routes. Here is how it typically lands on systems:

  • Software bundling — The most common delivery method. Installing a freeware tool from an unofficial source through software bundling silently installs MinerSearch alongside the program you actually wanted. The hijacker and miner components install without a visible prompt.
  • Deceptive browser extension prompts — A fake browser update alert, a misleading Chrome Web Store listing, or a deceptive extension recommendation page tricked you into installing the MinerSearch extension directly — which then modifies browser settings and deploys the mining script.
  • Malicious advertising redirects — Clicking a deceptive ad triggers a malicious redirect chain that pushes the MinerSearch installer through a malicious advertising network.
  • Pirated content packages — Game cracks, pirated software, and unofficial mods downloaded from torrent sites frequently bundle MinerSearch alongside the content through software bundling.

What Does MinerSearch Do?

MinerSearch causes harm in two distinct and simultaneous ways. Here is the full scope of damage:

  • Browser settings takeover — The hijacker component immediately replaces your default search engine, home page, and new tab page — then prevents you from restoring your original settings using registry key modifications and possible Group Policy entries that reapply changes after every browser restart.
  • Search hijacking and ad injection — All search queries run through MinerSearch’s infrastructure, injecting sponsored links and malicious advertising before results are delivered. Some injected results redirect to phishing pages or sites distributing additional malware.
  • Unauthorized cryptomining — The mining component runs hidden background processes that use your CPU and GPU to mine cryptocurrency — most commonly Monero — sending mined coins to the attacker’s wallet. This causes the device to run hot, the fan to spin loudly, battery life to decrease significantly on laptops, and overall system performance to degrade noticeably.
  • Data tracking and surveillance — MinerSearch uses embedded trackers to monitor all search queries, visited URLs, and browsing behavior for data collection — sold to advertising networks. This is spyware-class monitoring running in the background of every browsing session.

Simply resetting your browser will not fix MinerSearch if the underlying extension, registry modifications, or mining process component remains on your system. You need to remove the root cause at the system level before cleaning the browser.

What Should You Do?

Do not just reset your browser — MinerSearch will reinstall itself through remaining system components. Remove all MinerSearch-related extensions and programs first, then clean up the registry key entries and scheduled tasks. Run a full system scan to detect any mining processes still running in the background. Follow the complete removal and fix guide below this article for all browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari on Windows, Mac, and Android.
