.nocry Virus File – How Did It Infect My PC and What Happened?

The .nocry virus is a ransomware release that includes identification signs of the CryptoJoker family. It might be based on it, or alternatively, have code snippets from it. We don’t have information about the hacking group, however, given the fact that they are using possible code extracts from a well-known virus family, we assume that they could have used some help from underground hacking communities to obtain the code.

We anticipate that common infection strategy are to be used with the spreading of the .nocry virus files. This usually includes the sending out of infected file carriers. They are of popular data that is commonly downloaded from the Internet. A popular tactic is a use of macro-infected documents that are of all widely-used formats: text files, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases. When opened they will show a prompt asking for the built-in scripts to be executed to correctly view the content. This will actually trigger the infection. A similar strategy is used with the so-called application bundle installers. They are made by taking the original setup files of legitimate software and inserting in them the virus code. Both of them can then be sent out via different types of manipulative techniques.

Social manipulation techniques that are widely used by the criminals can be the sending out of email messages — they are prepared in bulk and send to the target criminals by faking notifications, letters, and etc. The same is done with websites — they are to be hosted on similar-sounding domain names, may use fake or stolen content, and can feature other similar concepts. The aim of the criminals is to make the recipients believe that they are interacting with safe and legitimate files, thereby infecting themselves.

Like previous versions of this ransomware family, the .nocry virus can launch its own set of modules before the actual encryption is started. This is particularly useful for hackers that want to do additional damage against the computer targets. It can also be used for other purposes, for example data gathering — the collection of important system data or personal user’s files. This can be used to expose the identity of the victims and for other purposes.

Various system changes can be made to the compromised machines. Usually they include the boot options, thereby making it a persistent threat. This means that the malware will start automatically when the computer is powered on. Other common types of changes that can occur are the modification of Windows Registry values. This can result in severe performance issues, data loss, and the inability to start certain processes.

Some of the advanced virus versions can be programmed to delete important files such as backups to make recovery more difficult. In addition, the hijacked information from the systems can be processed by a special module, revealing if there are any installed security programs. They can be then disabled or entirely removed. This is also referred to as a security bypass.

When other modules have finished running, the final part is the encryption phase. This utilizes a very strong cipher against user’s data found on the computers. This can include anything that ranges from archives, down to multimedia files, documents, backups, and etc. All of them will be marked with the .nocry extension. In folders where there are affected files a ransom note, lockscreen, or wallpapers will be placed. They will contain instructions on paying a decryption fee to the criminals.
