nqsq virus file

Nqsq is a nasty ransomware infection, that belongs to the STOP/DJVU virus family. This malware aims to enter your computer and encrypt your files, adding the .nqsq file extension in the process. Nqsq Virus – What Is Known So Far

Nqsq virus is yet another iteration of the notorious STOP Ransomware viruses and the latest ones of this virus include .wiot, .tisc and .mppq ones.

The Nqsq virus may infect your computer system via one of the two following methods, which are often used by about 80% of ransomware viruses worldwide:

  • If it is sent to you in the form of an e-mail attachment.
  • If you have downloaded it from some shady site as an executable program.

If you have received an e-mail, containing the Nqsq virus as an attachment, then there is a strong chance these files could be one of the following fake documents, masked to be coming from some big company or organization:

  • Work files.
  • Invoices.
  • Flight tickets.
  • Receipts.

Not only this but also the Nqsq virus can infect you if you have visited some type of suspicious or low-reputation type of website and downloaded one of the following files you may have been looking for:

  • Drivers.
  • Portable executables.
  • Keygens.
  • Patches.
  • Fake installers.
  • Cracks.

When the Nqsq virus infects your computer it may connect to a remote server, from where this infection will secretly download the virus files onto one of the following system directories:

  • %Local%
  • %LocalLow%
  • %AppData%
  • %Temp%
  • %SystemDrive%

Then, this ransomware may also set a _readme.txt ransom note so that you can see it. This note contains the extortionist message and may appear like the following:

STOP ransomware virus ransom message

The Nqsq virus uses the AES-256 cipher to lock the victim’s files. The ransomware could use an online or offline decryption key, it depends on whether it will be able to establish a connection with its command and control server (C&C server) at the beginning of the encryption process. In the event it doesn’t succeed to connect its C&C server, corrupted files could be decrypted by an offline decryption key. This, in turn, means that the free decryption tool released by Emsisoft may recover .nqsq files. You can find this tool in our article about DJVU/STOP ransomware.

In all other cases, the recovery of locked .nqsq files can happen with the help of the decryption tool owned by hackers. For this purpose, cybercriminals expect victims to contact them at manager@mailtemp.ch email address and ask for more details on how the ransom could be paid. As it becomes clear from their ransom message shown by the _readme.txt file, they promise a 50% discount off the regular price for the first 72 hours after the infection. Afterward, the price becomes $980. It should be probably paid in any cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, Monero, Litecoin, etc.

Another impact the Nqsq variant of STOP ransomware could cause is the creation of entries in the Run and RunOnce sub-keys of Windows Registry Editor. Those sub-keys are located in the following directories and you should clear malicious entries added there in order to secure your infected PC:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

The outcome of this process is that virus files start running automatically each time you switch on the infected Windows system. Checking and finding these value entries may help you manually locate and delete the virus.

.nqsq Files

The Nqsq virus encrypts the following file types by running a scan of all the folders of your computer outside of Windows ones:

  • Documents (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Audio files (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Archive file types (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Images (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Videos (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Other.

After it encrypts your files, the virus ads the .nqsq file extension to them, making them appear like the following:

New Text Document.txt.nqsq

It is definitely advisable that you refrain from paying the ransom. Contacting hackers hides additional risks for your online security and privacy. The best working solution to restore lost data is by using available backups. If you don’t have any, you can consider the help of alternative data recovery methods. You can find a few of them in the removal guide that follows.
