DriverUpdate Virus – How to Remove It

This blog post has been created with the main goal to help you detect and remove the DriverUpdate “virus” from your computer.

DriverUpdate and as many like to refer to it as a “virus” is actually what we know as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). These types of programs often tend to be downloaded on the users computers as a result of being directly added to them via various types of bundled packages and installers. The actual reason behind such programs is to display a lot of different advertisements and to trick users that they are legitimate utilities pretending to help by cleaning the computer or updating it’s driver. In reality, the outcome of those programs are general slowness of your computer and in addition to these, they may ask victims to opt in for a full version of their programs in order to fix computer issues. If you are experiencing issues on your computer as a result of the DriverUpdate “virus”, we recommend that you read this article thoroughly.

DriverUpdate “Virus” – Distribution Methods

Probably the main method that is used by DriverUpdate to slither onto the user PC’s is software bundling. This distribution method that is utilised by DriverUpdate by slithering it into the installers of regular freeware programs that users often download. Such programs often turn out to be your average movie player, converter, torrent downloader and any other programs you may be looking to download. In the setups of those programs, DriverUpdate may be included as a “free extra” or an “Optional Offer” and it is usually somewhere in the Custom or Advanced installation modes.

And since the program is Driver-oriented, it may also be bundled in modified installers for Video, Audio, Chipset and other types of drivers and firmware upgrades as well, so be careful and always check thoroughly everything you are installing step-by-step.

And in addition to this, since DriverUpdate is created by Slimware Utilities Holdings, Inc., a company that is known for making another such program, known as Slim Cleaner plus that is also with the same purpose, the program can also be downloaded from their site, where it is often advertised as a legitimate tool:

DriverUpdate – Analysis

Once DriverUpdate has been installed and has started running on your computer, the program will show scan results that almost always end up in claiming that your drivers may be outdated, but in reality, there may be nothing wrong with them:

In addition to this, the program may perform other activities on your computer such as:

  • Showing advertisements.
  • Installing web browser extensions.
  • Collecting browser data.
  • Running automatically on system start.

But the main purpose of DriverUpdate is to convince users to purchase the full version of this program since it is their only chance of updating their drivers, or so it seems.
