According to security research, PUP.SupTab is regarded as a suspicious program that has been associated with ad-supported software. SupTab has been promoted as an application to improve the user’s browsing experience. However, it should be treated as a PUP – or potentially unwanted program. One of the ways to help you determine if SupTab is a ‘friendly’ program is its primary .exe file.
HpUI.exe may be running many applications on the system, and thus its presence on it becomes a nuisance. Furthermore, SupTab is most likely responsible for the display of numerous advertisements that are linking to sponsored websites. Because the application may contribute to the system’s vulnerability, its removal should be a priority.
PUP.SupTab Distribution Method
As many other potentially unwanted pieces, SupTab has an official website and is available for download on shareware/ freeware pages. However, most cases scenario is it entered the system in a bundled download. We have explained how bundling works many times. To put it fewer words – just avoid bundling by selecting the Custom/ Advanced installer. Additionally, keep in mind that downloading from shareware pages is not always a good idea. Bundling is applied for monetary reasons, and the well-being of users is definitely not a priority to third parties.
Apart from bundling, the PUP may be distributed via fake Java/ Adobe updates. Usually, the fake pop-up will say that an update or a codec is needed to play a certain video. Just be careful and never click on random pop-ups that prompt you into downloading software of suspicious origin.
The executable is associated with other adware applications. If it is running on the system, be sure that SupTab is not alone.
A scan report by VirusTotal reveals that other adware and potentially unwanted pieces may be residing on the system. Here is a list:
- a variant of Win32/Thinknice.F potentially unwanted
As it becomes evident, HpUI.exe is connected to other roguish applications such as Lightning New Tab and Search Protect.
According to researchers at Enigma Software, another threat that may appear on the system is the iStart123.com browser hijacker. iStart123.com is a product of a Chinese company that promotes junkware and riskware. Browser hijackers modify the browser’s settings so that the default search page, error page, and new tab page are changed.
