RansomPlus Ransomware – Infection

RansomPlus ransomware could infect your computer by using various ways. The payload file that initiates the malicious script for the ransomware, which in turn infects your personal computer system, is spotted by malware researchers in the wild. You could see a payload file being analyzed on the VirusTotal website:

RansomPlus ransomware might also spread its infection by distributing its payload file on social media sites and file-sharing services. Freeware programs found on the Internet might be promoted as useful but also could be hiding the malicious script for the cryptovirus. Don’t open files right after you have downloaded them, especially if they come from suspicious sources such as links and emails. Instead, you should scan them, first. Run a security tool and scan them, while also checking of the size and signatures for each of the files for anything unusual. You might want to read the ransomware preventing tips thread from the forum section of the site.

RansomPlus Ransomware – Analysis

RansomPlus ransomware is a cryptovirus that is written on Visual Studio 2015. Malware researchers have found that it was written by somebody that goes by the name of “sergej”, as that is left inside the code of the malware. The ransomware will encrypt files on your computer device while appending the same extension to them when the process completes.

RansomPlus ransomware could make entries in the Windows Registry to achieve persistence, launch and repress processes in Windows. Some entries are designed in a way that will start the virus automatically with each launch of the Windows Operating System.

The ransom note will appear right after the encryption process completes. The note states what the demands of the cybercriminals are for the ransom price, along with all other instructions and demands for decrypting your files. The note is contained in a file named YOUR_FILES_ARE_ENCRYPTED!!!.txt. You can check out the ransom note from the picture below:

That ransom note reads the following:

YOUR FILES ARE ENCRYPTED! ! !
To restore (decrypt) them you must:
1. Pay 0.25 bitcoin (btc) to address 36QLSBTuBvK5rKD6PsM9tTFaacrjHCSNGd
You can get BTC on this site http://localbitcoins.com
2. After payment you must send Bitcoin Transacation ID to E-mail: [email protected]
Then we will send you decryption tool.

Inside the ransom note of the RansomPlus virus it is stated that the ransom sum is 0.25 Bitcoins, which is equivalent to almost 230 US dollars. You should NOT in any circumstance pay the cybercriminals. Your files may not get restored, and nobody could give you any guarantee for that. Furthermore, giving money to these criminals will likely motivate them to create more ransomware or do other criminal acts.

A list with file extensions that the RansomPlus ransomware seeks to encrypt is still unknown, but here are some examples of file extensions that have a high possibility of getting encrypted:

→.7z, .bmp, .doc, .docm, .docx, .html, .jpeg, .jpg, .mp3, .mp4, .pdf, .php, .ppt, .pptx, .rar, .rtf, .sql, .tiff, .txt, .xls, .xlsx, .zip

All files that become encrypted will receive the same extension appended to every one of them, and namely – .encrypted. The encryption algorithm that is used is AES.

The RansomPlus cryptovirus is very likely to erase the Shadow Copies from the Windows operating system by using the following command:

→vssadmin.exe delete shadows /all /Quiet
