Raped Virus File (Xorist Ransomware)

What Is Raped Virus File?

Are all your files suddenly locked and changed with the ..raped extension? If so, know that your computer system was attacked by a new form of ransomware. Detected as Raped ransomware (cryptovirus or “virus file,” as users often call it), the threat encrypts all data on the victim’s system, and drops a ransom note, called HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt with instructions for the victim. However, it is highly unlikely that following these instructions would get to any positive results.

It is also noteworthy that the Raped cryptovirus is part of the Xorist ransomware family. One of the latest example of a Xorist infection is the .CryptPethya Virus File, which was detected in January, 2021.

Xorist is a relatively well-known cryptovirus designed to encrypt all types of files such as audio, video, pictures, backups, banking data, and other personal user files found on a victim’s system. As already mentioned, the latest iteration of Xorist, Raped virus file, is no exception, as it is reported to encrypt all data found on the user’s computer. Continue reading to learn more about the ransomware and what steps to take to clean your system.

Raped Virus File Ransom Note

This ransomware demands a ransom in the amount of £1,000 in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. The ransomware operators have provided a Bitcoin address where the victim should make the payment.

The general advice among security professionals is that paying ransom to cybercriminals is not effective and it only powers further criminal operations. Instead of providing cybercriminals with more money to fuel their malicious activities, you can try and restore some of your data with the alternative methods listed in the instructions at the end of this article. Another option is to be patient and to wait for an official decryptor to be released, which will restore your ..raped files.

Here’s what the ransom note of the Raped virus file says:

Attention! All your files are encrypted!
To restore your files and access them,
You must pay £1,000 in bitcoin to the following bitcoin address
before sending payments send an email to Cryptoware12@protonmail.com
as the btc address may have changed
You have 5 attempts to enter the code.
once done send a email to Cryptoware12@protonmail.com
with picture of payment sent

How Is Raped Virus File Distributed?

Ransomware such as Raped filevirus is usually spread via pirated software and malicious email attachments. For your convenience, we will describe the two most common infection scenarios:

  • 1.You have downloaded a piece of dubious software from an untrustworthy torrent or freeware site.

Perhaps you wanted to use a free activation tool or some other seemingly useful application. In truth, most torrent websites contain unverified downloads that directly put you at risk of Trojans and ransomware.

If you have downloaded a trojanized application, it may have opened the door to more severe infections, such as the Raped ransomware. A general security practice that protects you against loopholes and vulnerabilities is applying all patches once they are released. This includes your operations system, browsers, and any other software program you use. Always keep in mind that malware often exploits known or new vulnerabilities (zero-days) to infect exposed systems.

  • 2.You opened a malicious email attachment sent to you by a seemingly verified sender.

Never forget that malspam (malicious spam) operators are smart enough to trick you into opening an infected email attachment.

The attached file may look like a regular document, but in truth, it contains malicious code that could compromise your system severely. Opening an unexpected email attachment is very dangerous and shouldn’t be done without additional verification. If you are unsure whether the attached archive is malicious or not, you can always google it or ask someone from our team for assistance.

In fact, phishing emails are often the culprit for various malware attacks, including ransomware. Even big enterprises are prone to ransomware such as the Raped virus file, let alone home users. A general security practice is using a combination of security practices to improve your system’s protection abilities, anti-malware included.
