Rdp Virus
Rdp virus is a malicious software identified as a strain of the CrySis/Dharma ransomware. The program is developed to encrypt valuable files by using a complex encoding cipher. The appended .rdp file suffix to files’ names is a sure sign that they are corrupted by the threat. Since .rpd files cannot be opened or used in any way, hackers try to blackmail victims into paying a ransom fee in BitCoin or other cryptocurrencies. Their decryption tool, however, is not proved to be capable of decoding .rdp files.
If you are one of the Rdp’s victims and your computer is infected with this variant of Dharma ransomware, we suggest that you read this article as it will help you to understand more about the virus’s activity and show you how to remove it fully from the infected PC.

Rdp Virus (Dharma Ransomware) – Overview
Several infection strategies could be used for the realization of Rdp ransomware virus attacks. The malicious activation file of this ransomware may appear as a malicious file launched on a shady website. It may be a software crack, a free version of a legitimate program, or a torrent file.
Still, the most common distribution method is known to be malspam or malicious e-mails that try to deliver malware on PCs. Those emails are directly sent to victims inboxes. Typically, they present a malicious attachment that may contain:
- Malicious macro-enabled documents.
- Files that lead to malicous macro documents.
- JavaScript files.
- Executable files.
- Other types of infection files.
As we noted, this ransomware is a variant of the infamous Dharma family of cryptoviruses. Among its predecessors are GET, Eye and Root. There is another ransomware called Rdp but it belogns to the Paradise family of threats.
All Dharma strains act in a similar way. Once the malicious payload file reaches a target computer system and runs on it, it disrupts the security and leaves it extremely vulnerable to additional malware attacks.
The primary goal of all malicious programs of this type is one – to blackmail victims into transferring money as cryptocurrencies to hackers’ digital wallets. That’s why the Rdp virus activates a built-in cipher module when it reaches the data encryption phase of the attack. This module is programmed to scan computer drives for certain types of files and transform their code.
Most of the crypto viruses encode the following types of files:
→ .ebd, .jbc, .pst, .ost, .tib, .tbk, .bak, .bac, .abk, .as4, .asd, .ashbak, .backup, .bck, .bdb, .bk1, .bkc, .bkf,

.jif, .wor, .csv, .msg, .msf, .kwm, .pwm, .ai, .eps, .abd, .repx, .oxps, .dot.
The encryption is conducted with the strong AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm. As a result, damaged files could not be opened. They are all renamed with three extensions the last of which is the .rdp extension. The two extensions before it are a personal ID number for the infected machine and an e-mail address misused by hackers.
If you have happened to become a victim of the Rdp virus, you will probably notice a pop-up window that displays a ransom message as well as a text file that contains another ransom message. The text file is named FILES ENCRYPTED.txt and it can be found somewhere on the infected PC.
The message displayed by the pop-up window states:
All your files have been encrypted!
All your files have been encrypted due to a security problem with your PC. If you want to restore them, write us to the e-mail rdphack@onionmail.org
Write this ID in the title of your message –

Step 2: Uninstall Rdp Virus and related malware from Windows
Here is a method in few easy steps that should be able to uninstall most programs. No matter if you are using Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista or XP, those steps will get the job done. Dragging the program or its folder to the recycle bin can be a very bad decision. If you do that, bits and pieces of the program are left behind, and that can lead to unstable work of your PC, errors with the file type associations and other unpleasant activities. The proper way to get a program off your computer is to Uninstall it. To do that:
Step 3: Clean any registries, created by Rdp Virus on your computer.
The usually targeted registries of Windows machines are the following:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
You can access them by opening the Windows registry editor and deleting any values, created by Rdp Virus there. This can happen by following the steps underneath:
Before starting "Step 4", please boot back into Normal mode, in case you are currently in Safe Mode.
This will enable you to install and use SpyHunter 5 successfully.
Step 4: Boot Your PC In Safe Mode to isolate and remove Rdp Virus
Step 5: Try to Restore Files Encrypted by Rdp Virus.
Method 1: Use STOP Decrypter by Emsisoft.
Not all variants of this ransomware can be decrypted for free, but we have added the decryptor used by researchers that is often updated with the variants which become eventually decrypted. You can try and decrypt your files using the instructions below, but if they do not work, then unfortunately your variant of the ransomware virus is not decryptable.
Follow the instructions below to use the Emsisoft decrypter and decrypt your files for free. You can download the Emsisoft decryption tool linked here and then follow the steps provided below:
1 Right-click on the decrypter and click on Run as Administrator as shown below:
2. Agree with the license terms:
3. Click on "Add Folder" and then add the folders where you want files decrypted as shown underneath:
4. Click on "Decrypt" and wait for your files to be decoded.
Note: Credit for the decryptor goes to Emsisoft researchers who have made the breakthrough with this virus.
Method 2: Use data recovery software
Ransomware infections and Rdp Virus aim to encrypt your files using an encryption algorithm which may be very difficult to decrypt. This is why we have suggested a data recovery method that may help you go around direct decryption and try to restore your files. Bear in mind that this method may not be 100% effective but may also help you a little or a lot in different situations.
Simply click on the link and on the website menus on the top, choose Data Recovery - Data Recovery Wizard for Windows or Mac (depending on your OS), and then download and run the tool.
