Sbpg Virus – How Does It Infect?

The Sbpg virus is a part of the STOP Ransomware family of infections, which includes the latest detected variants, using the .hgsh, .yqal and .mljx extensions. All of these variants typically get spread on computers via one of the two following ways:

  • If you downloaded some type of a file which upon executing has caused the infection.
  • If you have downloaded some type of an email attachment or clicked on a link that is shared on an email message sent to you that appears important.

If your computer has gotten the virus by opening an email attachment, then there is a strong chance that this attachment may pretend to be one of the following documents:

  • Receipts.
  • Invoices.
  • Work-related files.
  • E-Tickets for events or flights.

When the victim downloads and execute the attachment, thinking it is a legitimate file that is most likely something very important, they will be asked to enable the contents of the file, which triggers the following infection process:

Another way to get this virus is possibly by downloading some file that has been uploaded on a software download website with a low reputation. Many victims of this virus report that they have gotten their PCs infected by the following files being downloaded from such sites:

  • Key generator (or Keygen).
  • Fake installation files.
  • Software patches.
  • Self extracting archives or regular archives.
  • Cracked portable versions of apps.
  • Software or game cracks.

Sbpg Virus – What Does It Do?

Soon as the virus infect your computer system, it leaves behind the _readme.txt file. It’s purpose is to make you aware of the virus being present and make you pay hundreds of dollars in Bitcoin to the cyber-criminals for your files.

The ransom note has the following message:

STOP ransomware virus ransom message

Other activities that this virus is most likely involved and is modifying the registry editor of your computer system, more importantly targeting the following windows subkeys:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Not only this, but the Sbpg virus may also connect to a command and control server and download it’s malicious payload files, that could be located in the following Windows directories:

  • %AppData%
  • %Local%
  • %Temp%
  • %System%
  • %system32%
  • %Windows%
  • %SystemDrive%
  • %LocalLow%

.sbpg Files – What Are They?

The .sbpg files are encrypted with changed core data by the encryption mode that is used by this virus. When it encrypts files, the virus skips scanning the system directories of Windows and goes for your most often used file types, based on their file extensions, for example the following:

  • Audio file formats (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Pictures (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Video file types (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Archives (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Document file kinds (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Other types of often used data.

When the Sbpg virus has completed encrypting your files, it uses its own file extension after the original one of each file, making them look like the following:
